Grandma is moving to Thailand

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My name is Julia and I have two questions smile.png My grandmother who got the dual citizenship (Swiss and Thai) went to Thailand on non-immigrant visa for 90 days with the Swiss passport. She would like to extend her stay to one year.

1) Would that be possible ? knowing that she doesn't have any income, she is staying with her family and they take care of her. I read that retirement visa is only for people with a pension more than 65'000 THB or 800 000 THB in thai Bank.

2) After this year she will decide to stay or not in Thailand.

Does she need to apply for the "Permanent Residence in The Kingdom Application Form (TM.9)" even if she's thai ? She would like to keep her Swiss citizenship.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm going to Thailand soon to help her to sort this out.

If she is a Thai citizen why doesn't she enter Thailand on her Thai passport and not have to worry about visa hassles?

Thank you for your quick reply Samran. Because she doesn't know yet if she would like to retire or not in Thailand. And she didn't have any Thaipass at that time only ID.

Since your grandmother has Thai nationality, she can get an one years extension on that basis only. She would need her birth certificate or any other Thai document. Then If possible, she would need to leave return with her Thai passport, for indefinite, unlimited stay. Note for this it doesn't matter if she has been away from Thailand for 20, 50 or even 70 years.

And since your grandmother is Thai, also your father or mother are, and you are also. You can have your nationality recognized with birth certificates, issues at a consulate abroad where appropriate, and few more documents.

Thank you so much for your answer Paz! you are amazing!

Another questionS, would it be also possible to be permanent citizen without living the country ? She is old 85 moving her around won't be a good choice. If yes would the Thai Government let her keep her Swiss Passport?

Many Thanks X

She already is a "permanent citizen", she is for life. Only, she has forgot to renew her Thai passport. She can stay in Thailand for as long she wants. The Thai gov.t cannot and will not do anything about her Swiss passport. She doesn't even need to get a Thai passport, an ID card is enough no matter how old.

Thank you again Paz. wai.gif I am a bit relieved now. I was afraid she coudn't stay because she doesn't get much pension.

You were thinking in the wrong prospective. Your Granmda is Thai. She also has the right to public health services.

As said, your Grand Mother is Thai. She has every right to live in Thailand for the rest of her life.

2.23 In the case of a person who used to have Thai nationality or whose parent is or was of Thai nationality visiting relatives or returning to his or her original homeland:
Each permission shall be granted for no more than one year.

(1) Must have evidence that the applicant used to have Thai nationality or that his her parent is or was of Thai nationality.

If she entered on a swiss passport, she can get the stamp cancelled in thailand with proof of Thai citizenship. She does not need to leave the country, just make sure she has a document to prove her thai citizenship and she can stay as long as she wants

Can you tell us where and how that can be done?

I have never heard of it being done. Immigration says you have to leave and re-enter the country.
