I have some external lights controlled by a photo-cell auto switch installed under the eaves of the house. The lights normally turn on at dusk and off at dawn. Inside the house is a standard toggle switch ON/OFF normally left in the ON position.

The lights are not working. I have looked at the Lumina DNS1500 Switch and it has FOUR wires coming out of the switch instead of the usual three. In typical local style three of the wires are twist joined to three wires coming from the house circuit, visible as Red, Green and White. The fourth wire has broken off from where-ever it was connected apparently fatigued from weather action.

My problem, I dont know which of the three taped wire joins it should connect to.

Any advice?

Additional info.

I found, on-line, a cute schematic showing that there are two black wires going in to the switch, one Line and one Neutral, and two white wires coming out to 'LAMP' one Line and one Neutral. This indicates that I should be seeing four separate wires on the house side whereas I have only three. The wires emerge between two soffit boards (Shera) and there is some slack but no sign of a fourth wire. It will be very difficult for me to go through the roofspace to this point so access through the soffits by removing a board is likely but I don't want to do that until I am certain that there should be a fourth wire.

Ideas?

I have pried loose a soffit board and looked into the space but no sign of a fourth wire only the three. The red wire connects to the auto swich Line in, the White to the auto switch Neutral, the green to the auto switch Line out (assumed).

Is it possible that the fourth disonnected wire was on the auto switch Neutral in? The two are probably linked internally anyway.

That was my thinking too, it's unusual to see 4 wires on a photo switch.

Photo switches are cheap, the chances are that it's actually failed. Do however test that the incoming supply and neutral to the switch are ok before shelling on a new one.

You did check the lamp didn't you? :)

Yes, there are ten wall lights operated by the auto switch, all 5w CFLs, none lighting.

I bought a new switch with a 10 amp 100 lumen rating With the usual 3 wire connections. Checked that there is a supply from the house circuit with my voltmeter and wired in the new switch using L and N from the house and the third green wire assumed to be the load. Works fine so the old switch was bad but was installed 8 years ago so no complaints from me.

The new switch has a little 'pot' to manually adjust the sensitivity.
