BANGKOK: -- A SNAKE FARM has been operating in Uttaradit province without a licence, spreading fear among locals, according to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

L"Our investigation shows that the owner of the farm is in the process of seeking a licence," DNP director-general Nipon Chotibal said yesterday.

He spoke after the department looked into a complaint from locals, who were worried about pythons and boa constrictors being bred for commercial reasons in their home town.

Thailand has allowed the commercial breeding of 61 wild animals including pythons and boa constrictors since 2003.

"Before any snake farm is established, we have to check the origin of its stud animals to make sure that no wild animals are caught for the purpose," Nipon said.

He said the owner of the farm must also contact local authorities to get permission related to compliance with building and hygiene standards.

In regard to a report that a wild gaur was found dead in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Kui Buri National Park recently, Nipon said a team of veterinarians had conducted an autopsy on the animal.

"We are waiting for results from lab tests to determine if it died of hand, foot and mouth disease. We should get them within one week from now," he said.

With the latest death, the number of gaur that have died in Kui Buri National Park over the past few years has risen to 30. Hand, Foot and mouth disease was responsible for many of the deaths.

"We are spraying disinfectant in the area to try to prevent any outbreak of the disease," Nipon said.

What does an illegal Thai snake farm have to do with gaur deaths? Why was/is this snake farm permitted to operate illegally for over 10 years? Why is this Thai official rationalizing the snake farm status, because they have filed for a license?

So many illegal businesses in Thailand from the standby of not having the required licenses/approvals. To get all those things just means fees for licenses, taxes, govt approvals, etc., which is not good for business. No need.

Sorry. Some times government final approval does takes years if you do not offer bribes so do not be so judgmental if you do not known when he applied. Maybe when and if you have experience with government licensing agencies you will find out that sometimes you must be in operation before they will even provide a final license, as demanding to see in operation to finalize the process.

Lets use your expat brains and wonder why Nipon Chotibal why might nicely have stated they are in the process of applying.

You bitch they corrupt and then if they are not willing to grease palms, then you scram they are illegal and full of arrogance . You do not always get to be right just because you want to be.

The picture look like taken from a rat farm which supplies food to the snake farm.... What the....F.

Lovely white rats, all part of the food chain.

Rats eat mice and grain. Snakes eat rats. Thais eat rats and snakes. Everybody happy and well fed.wink.png

There is no reference to the snake farm having been operating for "over 10 years" as you state.

There is a reference to the breeding of certain wild animals being legal since 2003 but, hey, don't let facts get in the way of a bash, eh?

the fact they operated for so long with no licence and only applied when they were found out should preclude them from getting a licence and also mean a very big fine. Lets see if the govt has the balls to do the right thing here and take the owner to the cleaners, its way past time that the thai govts started to issue steep penalties on those that simply ignore the law to make a profit but I seriously doubt that anything will be done here.

"the fact they operated for so long with no licence.."

So when did this farm start operating? And the report doesn't say it was 2003.

My expat brain says "Why on Earth would I ever dream of farming snakes?"

Then again, why would I ever stick my head into a crocodile's mouth?

I guess it all boils down to a failure to communicate common sense.
