Cambodian Murdered at North Pattaya Restaurant

murder-1.jpg

PATTAYA: -- Banglamung Police were called to a Seafood Restaurant in Naklua just before daybreak on Thursday to investigate the suspected murder of a Cambodian waiter.

Police identified the man as Mr. John aged 30. He was lying on seats close to the cashier station inside the Sapanyao Seafood Restaurant and had sustained severe life-ending injuries to his head and neck.

In the kitchen officers found a sledge hammer and a knife, both covered in blood-stains which were taken into evidence. The restaurant owner, Khun Paitoon aged 38, arrived and told Police that the deceased man is one of 10 Cambodian workers at the restaurant and they would sleep and work at the restaurant.

Two of the workers, Mr. Bud and Mr. Pao currently cannot be located and are prime suspects in the murder. Security cameras at the venue had been moved, presumably by the suspects, who were caught on an external camera, leaving in a hurry, at the time when the murder is thought to have taken place. The entire incident is thought to have lasted 5 minutes.

Mr John, Mr Bud and Mr Pao - surely these aren't their actual Khmer names ?? Perhaps they are, but we'll never know apparently.

Police conducted checks on the remaining 7 Cambodian workers and found they did not possess passports or work permits

OK, so I guess they weren't big on identity. Two questions come to mind:

- if they found 7 Farang working in a single business without WPs, how quickly would the doors of that business be closed ?

- how do 10 Cambodians simply wander across the border without any documentation, make their way to Pattaya and find employment ?

I'm not one of the paranoid princesses who shriek in dismay every time someone is killed in Pattaya, but it would be handy if the BiB could spend a minute or two checking passports when they collect their tea money (ok - the money they get for ignoring little things like illegal workers). The Thais have every right to protect their labor market - seems that all goes out the window when a Thai-owned business can employ even cheaper labor from elsewhere. , just take a couple of photos of your workers - I cant guarantee I'd recognise them anyway, but it would be better than being told two (presumably) bucks-down alleged murderers are now on the run in your city and the police have nothing beyond some footage from cameras that were tampered with.

This is the same police farce currently engaged in high profile raids on 'entertainment venues' believed to be housing illegal workers : bang up job, fellas, but I guess there isnt much of a photo op when you dont have photos of young women huddled together waiting to pay their 'fines'. If a check of the office safe magically revealed the missing passports, it would be a clear case of the indentured workers said crackdown is supposed to be targeting, but why mess with an income stream for the sake of a few Cambodians who can be easily replaced ?

RIP, Mr John and RIP the system that makes it increasingly hard for a Westerner to stay in this country longterm but allowed yourself and thousands like you to be a non-person for a few baht a day. I'm prepared to give the Thai people a lot more credit than many on this forum, but their police just arent doing this community any favors IMO. The people of Pattaya can go about their business today knowing they're in good hands.

I would say the Thai-Cambodian boarder is less secure than the American-Mexico boarder...

Maybe the CCTV camera may even reveal some police and maybe even immigration officials dinning there.

This is not the first and will not be the last business in the kingdom to employ illegal migrants, 10 II's seems a substantial amount for such a restaurant, wonder if they employed any Thais?

hmmmm ..... I give bud & pao about 72 hours.
