a very nice morning to allsmile.png

the hot goss on the main street,is that big C is about to be built at the somong rd and 107 h/w intersection (no signs yet)

a couple years back it was mooted in the same spot...,but????

presently the land is being filled in, and the orchid flower tourist business has been moved from there, to up the somong rd

ideal location for such a venture ,

perhaps has some sound merit ,this time around, smile.png

any beautiful maerimites to confirm my hot goss???

I hear the same rumor but the area is not big enough for a BIG C maybe it will be a medium C. Do they have smaller sized options? The rumors of some supermarket are very strong but then there is a rumor of a Chang owned golf course and resort in Maeram so who knows?

Posted

I too have heard all the goss about Big C, also heard it was going to be placed up near Tiger Kingdom...go figure. That spot on the intersection is a prime commercial site but agree that its too small for a Big C. The only option they would have in order for it to work is to have either an underground carpark or get more land close by for a car park.

Would be good to see something like that in Mae Rim (Would save a lot of people travelling into town) Fortunately Im not going to hold my breath to see if it does in fact occur. A bit like the condo project (Ploen Rimtai) where I believe a few investors have been burnt.

Still all in all, Mae Rim is a great place to be/live.

A very good morning to all....

is potentially another hot potatoe

and to cap it , all tambons in mae rim are a lovely peaceful place to reside, and for E/S to open a top of a beerlao dark as wellbiggrin.png

A new eatery has also opened in the Mae Rim plaza..... I believe its Italian styled food with pizza featuring high on their menu.

I havent been there yet but was advised of it a few days ago. Its around the corner from SOTD (Steak of the Day) as if heading down to the new school. Its before the 2 Thai massage shops and pharmacy and on the left.

Bigger double rental place complete with pool table. Will be interesting to see what his pizzas are like and prices as well. Was told that big Leo is 80 baht, which is above normal for this area but still cheaper than LK road.

Will report back when I actually have a meal there. wai.gif

Their pizza is quite good, very thin crust but perhaps too much cheese. The rest of the menu is limited but food seems to be of decent quality.

Perhaps you are thinking about the new place on the main road just South of the market on that side of the road.

It is called 'The First'. I found the food to be very decent indeed - Italian mostly with a few Thai dishes as well.

Parking also easy.

There is also another new place in Maerim Plaza but I thought is was Vietnamese. (or will be).

I should add that the rumor I've heard is that Big C or another hypermart will be placed further north, past Rajabhat Uni and new bridge, before the 1095 intersection.

S.O.D. sister , i dont know pizzas at mae rim plaza, are a treat at 260 baht a pop

plus 5 star service thrown in

both are nice places, with nice people ,

have a nice afternoon to allsmile.png

The pizza place I was referring to is not opposite SOD in any form really. Its pretty well at the road intersection just past the food court as you come from SOD.

Agree with ES about staff and owners at SOD. Very nice people and so friendly.

Well, there is a new Gym being built behind the Mae Rim plaza. Stopped by yesterday..they will have a pool which looks like 25m plus gym and finished in May...so they say...

Guess now a good workout then pizza.:))

Must be one of the most boring places on earth if the 'buzz' on the High St is about the chances of a Big C being built. What drama next....somebody found a one Baht coin in the gutter ?

Disagree. Traffic heading in Chiang Mai can be horrendous at certain hours. A Big C in Mae Rim would be a welcome addition.

Given the traffic that already congests the 107 through Mae Rim, the building of yet another large warehouse style retail establishment does have major consequences for local residences, even for someone like myself who is unlikely to shop there on a regular basis. I for one would hope the rumor about placing the Big C further towards the north and the 1095 rather than at the 1096 is factual.

As for "The First", a bit pricey but good food. The women there speak excellent English. But go for the outside tables as the acoustics in the indoor room I found a bit harsh. As far as the Mae Rim Plaza, the only place to eat there is the Khao Soi restaurant at the northeast entrance.

Posted

Agree the Khao Soi place is good.....very good. And now they have a new set up and menu between 6pm and 2am. Very tasty food and great prices.

I also frequent the place (food joint) opposite Green Valley. Possibly the best value Thai food in Mae Rim. Surely beats going all the way into Chaing Mai.

And as for Trainmans little blog about Mae Rim.....probably the same size as his brain (amongst other parts of his anatomy) . We here enjoy our tranquil little town/village and are well aware of the urban sprawl that's coming our way. It may seem trivial to you but it does impact on our lives here.

All said and done, I'd rather live out here than be stuck in CM with all those lovely tourist types. Or even better.....the great traffic delays.

Don't knock what you haven't experienced.

I just noticed, you ended your post with a question mark, do you not know for certain that the sign at the site says as you claim?

Whoops, the Q mark was a typo, I meant it as a statement, not a question. Next time I pass by I will snap a photo of the sign and post it.

No problem, if you're sure, you're sure.

Thanks for your reply.

a whisper went around our stable y/day evening that a toyta dealership is being mentioned???

but on site to this point of time, no signs have ever been erected to confirm any business forthcoming

a huge land fill operation has just been completed

will eagerly await to see which way the wind blows

any beautiful maerimitessmile.png have any new goss on this site???

a lovely afternoon to allsmile.png

No, but I can recommend the pizza at the new pizza restaurant in Mae Rim Plaza, the place is called, "I Don't Know". They also do an interesting breakfast that is out of the norm., no more details, you'll have to go there yourself to see how it stacks up.

Nope. 'I don't know ' is not the new place... although they do a good breakfast. -and indeed they also have a pizza oven.

The new Italian place is round the corner although they are not open yet. Soon, I'm told.

I'm sure it is boring for some, but not for me. In fact, I think Mae Rim is a great place to live and here's why. Chiang Mai is an agricultural zone, and Mae Rim has the best conditions for agriculture. It borders the Suthep-Pui national park as well as large areas of protected forest, both bpa sa-nguan and bpa chumchon. Add to this natural watershed the canal that comes down from Mae Taeng and numerous small reservoirs. In addition to good irrigation, much of the arable land is not flat rice fields but hilly orchards more suitable for mixed agriculture than monocrop paddy.

These factors have helped local farmers hold onto their land and work it profitably. You don't see large areas of paddy being sold off for suburban housing developments at the same scale as in San Sai, Doi Saket, Sankamphaeng, and Hang Dong. Of course, these districts also have their good points and nice little corners. But one key difference is that there are relatively few housing developments in Mae Rim; most foreigners I know of live in normal Thai villages. I believe that this contributes to the very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Plus, temperatures are cooler in Mae Rim, owing to the hills and forests.

Maerimites enjoy these favorable environmental and socioeconomic conditions, with or without Big C. Come see and enjoy for yourself!
