BANGKOK: -- THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand has drawn up development plans for the Andaman Coast that aim to improve facilities and management practices to attract quality tourists to the area.

Kalin Sarasin, chairman of the board of TAT, said the agency had collected plans from tourism operators and related authorities in Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga.

Kalin said the province needed to improve their infrastructure and facilities while enhancing security and safety.

They must also improve community-management systems, especially in relation to wastewater and resources.

Kalin said the plan was to combine the three provinces into one cluster and market it overseas.

The TAT on Friday met with 150 local operators, tourism associations, and related authorities in Phuket to hear about issues the industry is facing there and seek ways to strengthen each province.

Kalin said the authority would propose its final plan to the Tourism and Sports Ministry this month and then pass it to government this quarter.

Kalin said Phuket could be developed even more as a quality destination by promoting existing local strength - the unique community - and creating more value products for tourists.

However, the island needed to improve its water resource management, community budget allocation and management, public transport, law enforcement, city management, beaches management, and ease investor nominee requirements.

He said Krabi should present its strength as a destination of traditional culture.

But the province needed to improve its human skills, wastewater and garbage management, environmental issues, and eliminate tourist scamming.

Phang Nga, meanwhile, could be turned into a natural site, but maybe needs to limit the number of visitors |and improve law enforcement of the environment and to protect its natural resources.

Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of TAT, said the agency wanted to host international annual events in Phuket in the low season to attract tourists.

He said the province also could promote itself as a wedding destination for foreigners and promote Phuket and the Andaman region as a celebrity magnet.

Thawatchai urged tourism operators to avoid lowering prices during the low season to enhance Phuket's reputation as a quality destination.

He said another plan aimed at increasing big spending tourists centred on working with overseas wholesale companies of targeted groups.

The TAT also plans to join luxury travel get-togethers abroad such as in China and Europe, while invite wedding-planner firms to these areas to get product information before targeting the market.

First time I read thoughtful approaches from TAT...

But what about Patong-closed because it is too late?

try not to hit tourists over the head with mattocks or rape them would be a good start!!!

....theyre urging hotels not to drop their prices during low season? why? its standard business practice all over the world to try and entice more people to visit.

The authorities think lower prices will muddy its status as a top end destination.

In Australia Phuket is considered a cheap third world tourist destination no better than Kuta beach Bali. Phuket attracts hundreds of thousands of aussies on cheap package deals. ( quick direct flight)

Put up the prices and they'll all switch to any one of half a dozen Pacific destinations superior to seedy Phuket.

Interesting they say tourist scams , improving Thai social skills and cleaning up the environment are back on the agenda.

No matter what comes of this with TAT involved it's bound to be a raging success and it won't be long before figures are available to prove it.

It just goes to show that they haven't got a ****ing clue!

Got bored after reading the 1st paragraph, just more talks and blah blah blah BS in your face farrang, more TAT crap krap.

Too late to change.

No need to entice more visitors. Just say you expect numbers to rise 15% in 2015.

It works in the rest of the country. TAT = Magic.

What about telling the Phuket taxi's and tuktuk's to use the metre like in the rest of Thailand??

Even better would be government-run transport along the coast. Nobody likes those taxidrivers anyway.

Limit the number of visitors? What then, a hotel building stop or checkpoints at the provincial border to turn visitors back when the quota is full?

Khao Lak will just keep expanding.

For one, they should change the moronic (11:00 - 14:00 and 17:00 - midnight, 'service' hours) liquor law. I 'forgot' yesterday and went to 7/11 at 10:20 AM. The poor little guy at the till said "Sorry, cannot" and I replied with "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa f***!!!!"

TAT shouldn't forget the strategy of charging foreigners 10X fees for any island natural attraction over what Thais pay. And if Thais pay nothing, it's a free-for-all to whatever the market will bear for foreigners.

And don't forget to make sure that the coal-fired power station gets built. That will insure larger tourist numbers.

LOL check out the picture - rough seas, dark storms on the horizon...the future of Thai tourism.

This is where the future of Andaman tourism lies, up the coast. Hopefully the Burmese government will avoid the mistakes the Thais have made.

I'm not so sure.

Staying in a nice hotel in Phuket without the fragrance of raw sewage, might ruin the Phuket experience for me!

Have not seen one beach tourist destination in Thailand with a long term sustainability plan yet, the Thais will destroy all the natural beauty that once was available in Khao lak, same as happened in Phuket, Phi-Phi, Koh Lanta, Krabi, Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Samet, Koh Chang, Koh Lipe, Pattaya. The locals got no clue when it comes to protect the environment, money is god here and they want it now, not forever.
