I just arrived in this sub-forum by mistake (you are the forum above Pattaya) and clicked on this thread. What a great story and a refreshing post. Please extend my condolences to your maid and I hope her son makes a speedy recovery. As for the Good Samaritan; what a generous donation.

moral of this story is, luckily, a stranger who was RESPONSIBLE in handling their finances, was able to do a good turn. lucky for the young lad the stranger didn't chuck it all in to live in "paradise".

Oh right, he gave her 14,500 over two months, which he is happy about. Is that over her salary? Is she paid 1,000 baht a month as is the norm here in Lamai and the rest is to be gained from customers?

Sorry, but you should know being in Thailand that even though you have "known her for five years," it is hard to know just where the truth of this lies and the exaggeration begins. It doesn't take 19 years to understand that lying, embellishing the facts and omission of information is a hallmark here. Did the doctor who said to send him to a better facility know what he was talking about? What is the condition of the youth?

If it is all true then fine, but a tourist giving 20K to a bargirl's sick son smacks of chumming for suckers to me. As I say, if it is all true fine and good; have you verified any of this or are you taking everything at face value, meaning accepting everything this Thai bargirl says?

I am curious why she had no money and you, a business person, also has no money. Are you ready to declare bankruptcy? How much money does the youth need for whatever unknown condition?

Some details would fill out the story.

Latesdt Update....

The boy has managed to keep food down, all be it liquid food, for the last few of days, but had a minor setback last night when he chucked his dinner up.

I think if you read the original post the doctor in Isan suggested to go to a better hospital in Bkk, maybe they didn't have a specialist for this kids problem and he only said maybe surgery, as for the 30bt scheme that's what you get 30bt worth. I'm sure you will forward a contribution

Excuse an outsider butting in but I live in Issan and have been to the local hospital quite a few times with the old man, your right in what you say pay 30 Baht and thats what you get. The wards are always full so the beds go into the corridors, if you want a bit of comfort it costs 400 Baht a night even my wife says if she ever gets sick take her to a city hospital. don't get me wrong they do there best but the facilities are just not there.

The "Myth" is the 30 baht thai health plan. That may cover just getting in buy you are going to pay for any type of procedures. It is better to go to one of the private hospitals in BKK then. Either way, you are going to pay, so why not get good treatments. Relatively, getting treatment here is way cheaper than the rest of the world and most of the doctors are pretty descent.
