Gonzo the Face Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Anyone experiencing difficulty in getting cooking oil???? Also the price seems to be creeping up. Today Makro was completely out of that brand that I usually buy in the 13 or 18 litre tin. Makro seems to be doing some strange things this past year. Like to hear your input on the cooking oil. G
kaptainrob Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Logistical problem, perhaps? Hang Dong had stock today.
Chiengmaijoe Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 There has been a Palm cooking oil supply problem for the last month at least. As new stock comes in it is quickly sold out. The government wants to import more from Malaysia or Indonesia, and local suppliers are not pleased. The price has been rising steadily for a while. I imagine there is some witholding of stock going on too. In one of the big stores a week or so I saw a sign limiting each customer to 2 or 3 litres. A sure sign of a shortage.
Chiengmaijoe Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I just got back from Makro and they had no 18 lire cans of Palm Oil and only one brand of 13.75 litre palm oil, with not much of that in stock either.
worgeordie Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 When buying the lge tins of palm oil,you should check the price per ltr,as the ltr.size is/was a controlled price ,where the larger sizes are not,so buying a 18 ltr.tin might be more expensive than 18x1 ltr. plastic bottles.that happens with some other products at Makro, Regards Worgeordie 1
Tywais Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 From a commodities web site - 'Thailand plans to import around 50,000 tonnes of crude palm oil from February due to a domestic shortage.' Feb 11, 2015 And a topic in Thaivisa News - http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/793214-thailand-to-import-50000-tons-of-raw-palm-oil-to-ease-expected-shortage/
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted February 13, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 13, 2015 Use only sunflower or rice bran oil. Both are plentiful here and inexpensive. Most anything else is going to have high saturated fat levels. These oils have super low saturated fat levels due to their high flash points. Take car of your arteries. Avoid soybean, corn, cottonseed, and canola oil, like the bubonic plague. 4

Yes,CP, i believe they were major shareholders in Makro ,but had to sell them, along with Lotus (Tesco/Lotus,in the big crash ,but now are buying back what they had to sell off, think they would like Lotus back too,and as Tesco not doing too well in the UK at least maybe they will get the chance. regards Worgeordie
Popular Post worgeordie Posted February 13, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 13, 2015 Just back from Makro on Superhighway and they have good stocks of cooking oil, BUT only in big cans and what looks like 500cc or less bottles.very few 1 ltr size, check the price on one brand 18litre per litre 49.45, same oil in 1 ltr bottle 41.67 per ltr, so buying 18x 1 ltr bottles you would save 140 THB,plus the ltr bottles are easier to use,and you could recycle the bottles,it would not mean you were a cheap Charlie, but a sensible businessman, right ,Joe I only buy Rice bran oil ,and was surprised to see the price had dropped 2 THB a ltr, maybe a result of over supply from all the rice they are milling for export regards Worgeordie 5

This is another zombie idea that has long since been exploded. Exploding zombies!! At any rate, you can look up the latest massive studies and the history of the mistaken belief that saturated fats are bad for your health. The only kind of saturated fats that are harmful are the transfats (hydrogenated vegetable oil) which are mostly an industrial artefact.
Popular Post quidnunc Posted February 13, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 13, 2015 As for palm oil, we should all be using a lot more of it. There's still a fair amount of untidy rain forest out there where there could be neat and picturesque rows of oil palms.. Actually, I would prefer golf courses or, best of all, parking lots but I'll settle for endless expanses of plantations.. 3

chingmai331 Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Peanut oil the best for all purposes, well nearly all. Olive best for raw food salad. Otherwise, peanut for fry, bake and cake. Carrot cake with peanut oil, HMMMM gud. Esp loaded with cream cheese and sugar frosting. See chart to confirm, if cost and health conscious.
worgeordie Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 I make my own lard. Tastes great. There was a report on the BBC the other day, saying fats like butter and full fat milk are not bad for you ,taken in moderation of course, and in fact could be good for you, "a little bit of what you like does you good" regards Worgeordie 1

We use palm oil the most but also use sunflower, soya, peanut and also a goodly bit of bacon fat. Found the last 2 big tins at Lotus this afternoon.
elektrified Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Just got in from Makro. There were 60 tins of 13.75 litres or whatever it is sitting on the floor. Soybean oil - which I think is the most unhealthiest. Didn't notice the price.

And the suggestion that canola oil is unhealthy is just plain bonkers for most every opinion and study you will find.
