Big condoms partly to blame for Thai teen STI spike: ministry

Bangkok, Thaïlande | AFP |

BANGKOK: -- Thai health officials Thursday said teenagers who are too embarrassed to choose condoms that fit are partly to blame for a recent spike in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among their peers.

In a statement ahead of Valentine's Day -- a time when Thai officials often issue a flurry of warnings about the potential pitfalls of young love -- the kingdom's Ministry of Public Health warned that STIs among 10-19 year olds had increased almost five times in the last ten years.

"It is due to the fact that only 43 percent (of teenagers) use condoms -- and also because they choose condoms that are too big for their actual sizes and they are afraid they will be mocked for being too small," the statement said.

The ministry added it planned to spend 47 million baht ($1.4 million) this year to distribute more than 43 million condoms to people across the country.

Despite its anything-goes image, Thailand has a conservative streak, meaning that young people are told to abstain from intercourse altogether instead of being educated about using protection.

Experts say that lack of awareness has led to soaring rates of teenage pregnancy and STIs.

According to the United Nations, the birthrate among Thai teenagers was 47 per 1,000 girls from 2006 to 2010 -- roughly in line with neighbouring Cambodia, but significantly higher than Malaysia's 14.

Doctors have said the true figure is likely to be higher given many Thai teens will seek an abortion, even though the procedure is illegal under almost all circumstances.

Valentine's Day often leads to bouts of concern over these issues. This year officials have called on teenagers to have a special meal or visit temples instead of having sex.

Some Thai officials have called for condom machines to be placed in schools -- a plan that has been rejected so far by education chiefs.

Is it April 1st already?

Maybe if Thai men were occasionally held responsible for there actions rather than having their collective <deleted> wiped for them by their mothers until they are married THEN things might change.

Sadly as we can see by the release of this ridiculous statement the patients are clearly still in charge of the asylum.

The specialists are finally confirming what we foreigners knew all along about Thais penis size. Heheheee....

They talk enough about not having sex on the news that it makes students want to try it just to see why they are being told not to.

The penis of a 10-15 year old is still growing, so I wouldn't read more into it than that.

It's not about penis size, it's about sizing the condoms correctly. If they are too big, they slip off and then STI can be spread. Education is the answer but the Education Minister has his head buried in the sand or, as we would say in the States, his head up his ass.

What? 10 years old's have STD's? Where is the size marked on a packet of condoms, I never noticed. I always thought Valentines day was just harmlessly giving someone some chocolates or a card, anonymously. Not so in Thailand where it has transpired into a huge bacchanalian orgy, involving millions of teens, love hotels, lost virginity, and split condoms.

Of course all the Thai Visa members have massive organs, so let's all laugh at the Thais and feel smug (favourite past time for most of you).

My God some of you people are truly pathetic.

Hmm, sounds as if you are not part of the group with the massive organs.

Nope. It just means I don't need to belittle (sorry) other people/nationalities/races to make myself feel superior which is exactly what those posters are doing and it really is quite sad. And my bet is that most of those people have rather meagre offerings in the trouser department otherwise they wouldn't feel the need to make fun of others.

Maybe they should use some Scotch tape to somehow attach condon to penis, no? How difficult can this be!? Or Crazy Glue maybe, I dont know

How about a velcro fastening at the base? One size fits all then. thumbsup.gif

Yeah, and the Velcro could function as a goats eye at the same time. Two birds with one stone.

All the farangs making fun of the thais penis size little did they know that their GF or partner is sleeping with one while you are away back in farang land working hard as well as sending money over to your prized possession... You hear it all the time. if you haven't, then you obviously too busy thinking of your penis .. Lol
