BANGKOK: -- Mixed martial arts is big in Thailand with training camps set up in Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai, and there will be a chance to see some of the top fighters in the kingdom in action next month.

Full Metal Dojo 4 is set for Live House Studio in Bangkok on Feb. 21 and will feature fighters from all over Thailand and beyond doing battle in a circular cage with the audience able to get within touching distance of the action.

“Full Metal Dojo is more than just the sport of MMA,it is more than just an amazing party, it is full tilt event that brings all the heart and character that Bangkok has to offer into a real life ‘80s/90's action flick,” promoter Jon Nutt said. “You remember that scene in Ong Bak, when Tony Jaa wound up fighting in the club? We're that, only real.”

After two successful events in Phuket, the promotion is moving its operations to Bangkok. This will be the second event in succession to take place at the venue in Chatuchak Park.

The card is headlined by Jomhod Kiatadisak, a name which will be very familiar to Muay Thai fans with long memories, as he makes his professional debut against a Cambodian kickboxer called Vorn Viva.

Jomhod made headlines recently when he came out of retirement to fight Somluck Kamsing in two fights which both had eye watering multi million Baht bets riding on their outcome but the 44-year-old is best known for winning Lumpinee and Rajdamnern titles in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

He is starting MMA very late in life, but Jomhod will want to showcase some of the striking skills which made him a legend in kickboxing circles and helped him win multiple world titles, as he became one of the first Thai fighters to travel overseas to train and fight.

While there will be a lot of intrigue surrounding Jomhod’s debut, particularly as he is taking on a former kickboxing world champion from neighboring Cambodia, the card also contains some up-and-coming Thai talent with welterweights Ratcharat Yimprai and Teera Ratprasertporn set to face off in the co-main event.

There is no doubt that MMA is gaining traction among young Thais with an event taking place at the prestigious Thammasat University recently, but the locals learning the sport are outnumbered by the hundreds of foreigners who travel to camps such as Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket every month.

A number of these globe trotting mixed martial artists will be in action at FMD 4 which will feature fighters from Chile, Puerto Rico, France, Sweden and Japan as well as Thailand and Cambodia.

Charismatic promoter Nutt, who is known for his love of Thai music and can be heard singing the Royal Anthem at the start of every show, urges people to come for the all-around experience as well as the thrill of the actual fights,

Jaa is unlikely to be cage side on Feb. 21, although Muay Thai superstar Buakaw Banchamak did put in an appearance at the last event. Nutt gives potential fight fans a breakdown of what to expect from the forthcoming FMD.

“From the moment you get to Live House studios at JJ Green, the vibe in the air is buzzing and the atmosphere picks up to the point where it feels like a bunch of warriors are going to storm in and fight in a Full Metal Dojo... And then it really does happen. It's amazing.”

Nutt was initially scheduled to compete on this card but the bout was nixed when his opponent pulled out with an injury. However he is hoping to put together a heavyweight fight in addition to the following seven contests which have already been confirmed.

Tickets to Full Metal Dojo 4 are available for THB1,200 and 3,500. More information is available online.
