sensorial experience in taking photos

other than those beautiful pictures, wonder what sensorial experiences amaze you in the journey of taking photos ?

two unique senses still imprinted in my memory, although really long ago :

the sound of sliding out the stainless steel shielding plate from the magazine; and

the ‘strange’ taste of licking the tip ( and sealing ) the 120 roll !

and you . . .

The sound of the shutter on a Hassie 500C the moment the release button

is pressed. Others within the 500 meter earshot range may have detested it

but I loved it.

Another was the sound of my old motorised F2AS on the H setting with the

mirror locked up, which it had to be at that setting.

Last but not least...the sound of opening the back to change film then the

click when I closed it.

once I was an appointed photographer for an classic orchestra in the concern hall, with this Nikon F2AS motor . . .

you can continue the rest of the story . . . I really want to drill into the floor somewhere !

I miss having a long zoom, made me feel like a hi-tech pervert or a spy, even though my neighbours didn't really get up to much anyway, some were pensioners.

every time I try to be un-seeable as possible, but not much success :-(

I do un-brand some of my equipment, nevertheless the size tells . . .

I once tried the H2 setting without the mirror locked up just to see what happens.

After about 8 frames the camera died with a horrible sound resembling a semi

truck being torn apart as it ran against a spiked wall. Removed the lens & the

innards looked like a mini-grenade had been tossed in there. Bits of spring,

bits of glass, twisted metal frames, ripped up shutter curtain etc. Never fear

it was an agency camera.

Nikon did make a "blimp" for the F2 when motorised though. Never was able

to find one because every "pro" photo store I went to...even in Japan...told me

they had no stock & may never get said stock in future. So much for acoustic

deadening eh.

I hope you and the orchestra conductor went & had a pint or two after the show.

Now...I must go and see a feller about about a rip saw for some teak logs I need

to cut.....

Mind you...that F2, in all it's incarnations...was & most likely still is, the best damn

camera Nikon ever made...bar none.

Cheers!

I had exactly that old-school damn good F2+MD2+MB1, bought in 1979. I still have it, although it can't make any sound. the last service and oil was 10 years ago in a vintage camera shop in Hong Kong. it is really the legend of Nikon !

mind you, it is not only that mechanical sound, but also the mechanical vibration on your hand !

p.s. that was my first assignment with the orchestra; well, that was also the last :-)
