Backcountry Unpaved Roads

Featured Replies

Hey all

I'm planning an extensive motorcycle trip and I am hoping to hug the western border all the way up to Mae Hong Son. I've been prepping my map with Garmin Basecamp with OpenStreetMap and I've come across ~100km of what appears to be twisty unpaved road.

The stretch is between:

  • N15° 11.070' E98° 28.527' and
  • N15° 47.252' E98° 35.776'
  • See KML attached for reference

The ride: 2014 V-Strom 650, 2-up, fully-loaded Givi Outback Trekkers & large Shad top box.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone here ever been on this stretch before? If so, can you please share your experience?
  2. General opinions on unpaved backroad riding in Thailand are also appreciated.

If Google made it there, you can do too biggrin.png

(from Feb 2013)

And as you can see it seems to be a concrete (cement) path as they are seen often in upcountry.

We have some around our village, usually about 5 m wide and 15 cm thick.

Yes thats unpaved following Street View.

Such a path will not be fun if its raining.

With dry weather it will be shaky at worst, but not a great deal.

I drive such paths occassionally on the scooter.

A few km only though,

I have had good luck with an app for my Android Device called Maps With Me. I do not know how they do it but you can download country maps for use offline. Works great for me. I used it sucessfully in the country side. biggrin.png

Mae Hong Son should be fun enough by itself, you don't need this extra hassle. Also, I'm thinking you don't really want to be in "not usually populated" border areas, the other people using those areas are using it because they expect it to be empty....
