BANGKOK: -- A large crowd of gamblers were arrested and two dozen cocks seized just around the corner from a school and police station yesterday.

Metropolitan and district police rolled in on motorcycles to arrest 89 suspected gamblers and their gear which included playing cards, kratom, and a small amount of cash from the alleged gambling den located near the Din Daeng police station and Surasak Montri School, according to Bangkok Post.

Bangkok police are eager to demonstrate their commitment to tackling such operations after being publicly embarrassed by the military last week and accused of negligence.

So police are eager to show their commitment to fighting crime yet one has to ponder how long this operation has been going on with the police approval or protection. This us more of an embarrassment if anything that an operation so close to their station.

An embarrassment to whom? Considering illegal betting dens and casinos have been here decades next up Muay Thai will be banned as bets are no doubt places on those too!!

Rather than shutting all these dens down, regulate and legalise them..gamblers will always find a way to gamble even if it's down to what colour of car passes you by next!! ?

Is it the cock fighting which is illegal, the gambling or both?

I travel to the south regularly and it seems to be very popular down there. Every single weekend literally 100's of pick ups converge on what looks like a purpose built venue right near the center of Chumphon. They even have police directing traffic. It seems a way of life down there, and pretty much every bloke in the area spends there Saturday and Sunday there and no one batters an eye lid.

"A large crowd of gamblers were arrested"

But the casinos are always strangely empty when these flatfoots arrive.

Right.

Some chickens and kratom leaves. Wow.

The same silly window dressing approach they're trying to use with Human Trafficking. wai2.gifwai.gif

Truly laughable.

Wait how much money was seized? was it a little or a lot just a little made it to station. This story so confusing, so how many ladyboys arrested for fighting? Damn one would think there in the Philippines here.

Every Sunday morning down by the riverside just outside my village the local gather for cock fights. It's the gambling the goes with the fights, not the actual cockfights themselves that the authorities clamp down on. The fights are pretty innocuous, I keep free range chickens and regularly see my cockerals fighting amongst themselves. In the cockfights the birds do not fight to the death, nor are they fitted with metal spurs like they do in the Phillipines.

A good fighting cock can be worth quite a lot of money. A few months ago a local went to Rayong to purchase a prime fighting bird, it cost him 5K baht. That night some bugger stole it.

Another angle, I've heard a few Thais say that gambling addiction is quite rampant (maybe it's the exact same in other countries too, I don't know), but the real problem is the children of the gamblers not eating enough, not eating properly, not going to school etc, because the family income is pretty much lost on a regular basis to gambling.

My dog had a habit of bumping off neighbours chickens that roamed too near my house. Of course, when it came to reimbursing the neighbours the chicken was always classed as a champion fighter. So is my missus, and would never fall for a cock and bull story like that.

As the law is, and it was reported less than 12 months ago, cock fighting is legal, as long as no cocks are injured. Though I don't see how you can cock fight without injury, but then we are dealing with Thai thinking.

Was it shut down after the police lost some bets on "Fluffy Dusty the Feather Plucker?" and what about the fried chicken shack

down the road? Where are they going to go to get the next batch of pre-tenderized chickens to deep-fat-fry?.......Is the world really coming to an end?
