NLA sets closing speeches on ex-senators’ impeachment on Mar 11

BANGKOK, 5 March 2015 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has completed the questioning of 38 former senators behind the illegal amendment of the previous constitution while the closing statements are to be delivered on March 11.

NLA members spent over two hours today to inquire officials from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the 38 former senators about the allegation that the latter group had attempted to alter the 2007 Constitution on the section pertaining to the Senate’s makeup through unethical means. The inquiry session was convened after the impeachment motion was lodged earlier by the NACC.

Mr Witthaya Inala, one of the ex-senators, denied the claim that the charter amendment bill considered by Parliament had been brought to the table at the last minute without prior notice to the members. He insisted that the draft had already been acknowledged and had only been adjusted slightly from the version proposed by Mr Udomdej Rattanasathien.

Meanwhile, former Senator Direk Thuengfung affirmed that the charter amendment and the change in the Senate’s composition involved no personal interests as none of the then-senators was planning to apply for another term in office.

In the end, the NLA scheduled March 11 for both the plaintiff and the defendants to present their closing statements on the impeachment case.
