All members were given 4 year sentences for their involvement in the 2009 riots. A Pattaya court decided the fate of 15 “Red Shirt” members Thursday. The political movement is to blame for a riot at a regional conference in 2009. Members were sentenced to 4 years in jail for inciting the riot. The group members are supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister who was ousted by the military in 2006. Senior members of the group were sentenced along with a former lawmaker and a former singer. In total, 13 of the 15 members were present during sentencing. The two absent members were granted bail. The “Red Shirt” movement is blamed for a riot that took place during a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Many of the leaders present at the time had to be evacuated by helicopter as 2,000 protestors demanded new elections. The group’s main argument was that two prime ministers were forced out of their office. Thaksin’s supporters fear that the government is attempting to reduce the former prime minister’s influence. Many of his supporters have been jailed or condemned for their actions. Opponents have not faced justice for their crimes, such as occupying two of Bangkok’s airports for nearly a week in 2008. The 2009 riots were the beginning of violence that escalated in 2010. The protestors rioted again in 2010 along with armed militants. These protests lasted for 2 months, and ended with more than 90 people killed and 1,500 injured. Much of the violence came only when the army was dispatched to remove the protestors. Figures are not given on who caused the most injury: the protestors or the military. A constitution is currently being drafted that will strengthen the current bureaucracy. Their lawyer Karom Polpornklang said Friday night the court has granted them bail with asset worth 800,000 baht as collateral for each convict.However he said as the collaterals are not yet sufficient, they stayed overnight in prison Friday night.He said they were collecting enough collaterals to put as bails and expected them to be released today. He also said that core leader Arisman Pongruangrong was also not yet freed as the court needed to sign new conditions before letting him go. His bail was set at two million baht, the lawyer said. Shows how inept the PTP were then doesn't it. In power for three years and could not even bring charges against those yellows at the airport. I suppose Chalerm's CAPO was to busy trying on disguises to capture Suthep! Which incidentally they failed at as well. Mind you there was no issues charging 84 yellows for a TV station take over in 2008 that was relatively peaceful while the reds used military grade weapons to take over the TV station in 2010 and no red shirt was ever jailed. NanLaew Posted March 7, 2015 Share Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) Good to see that the usual suspects still can't get their heads around this new-fangled aspect of Thailand's 'special democracy' that has been handily labeled 'peace and reconciliation' or 'bringing happiness to the people', depending on your bias preferences. Of course PTP didn't waste their time on a yellow witch hunt after the airport closures... but neither did the stop-gap, appointed Democrat party government that they subsequently stole the election from. PTP were way too busy raping and pillaging the rice farmers and the first-time car buyers, mishandling the floods, selling bits of the country to Cambodia, etc..
