NLA approves draft law on infectious animal diseases

BANGKOK, 6 March 2015 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly has approved in principle the draft amendment to the law on infectious animal diseases.

The NLA sitting on Thursday reached a majority vote to accept the draft amended law on animal germs and toxin, with three abstentions.

The legislature also agreed to appoint a 19-member special committee to work on the draft law, and scheduled the deliberation within seven days. The entire process is set to be completed within 60 days.

The latest draft law that received an endorsement of the NLA was first passed in 1982 and the amendment was initiated to update it to suit the current global conditions.

Under the amended law, the Public Health Minister who will receive advice from a committee on animal germs and toxin, which is yet to be set up, is authorized to make all announcements about the details, the methodology, the list of germs or toxins, and all related information to protect the public.

In addition, more efficient control measures and clauses related to legal punishment have also been added to the old law.
