Heavy rains drench northern provinces

PHITSANULOK: -- Flash floods have hit several northern provinces following drenching rains, forcing villagers to temporarily evacuate to higher ground.

In this lower northern province, flash floods inundated two districts following a heavy rain Saturday night. Floodwaters in one village was up to one metre deep while villagers were ordered to be ready to evacuate their homes.

Teachers and pupils at one school hurriedly moved educational supplies to higher ground, while a weather department office in the province here said the amount of rainfall in Phitsanulok was up to 94 millimetres, the most reported for the lower North region.

Heavy rains have been falling in Uttaradit province during the past two days as officials repeatedly advised residents to pack their belongings and be ready to leave their low-lying homes after rainfall of 45 millimetres brought rainfall levels near the danger level of 60 millimetres.

Several homes located near canals are now under water after water overflowed banks.

In the northern border province of Chiang Rai, the impending flood situation is also quite worrisome as water levels in canals and rivers are rising rapidly. More than 20 houses in a village of Mae Chan district were under water.

Provincial authorities were inspecting damage so that assistance could be given to flood victims
