Pattani Bomb Targets Buddhist Monks, Injures 6

PATTANI – Police say four security officers and two civilians were injured by a homemade bomb that targeted a group of Buddhist monks in the southern border province of Pattani this morning.

The blast occurred at Taluban intersection in Saiburi district at around 7 am today, police officers at Saiburi Police Station say.

According to police, a squad of border patrol police was escorting Buddhist monks during their morning walk to collect alms and food when the bomb went off. The bomb was reportedly placed in a rubbish bin on the side of the road.

Four police officers and two civilians were injured by shrapnel, police told reporters. Police officers say they believe the bomb was planted by "violent individuals," a common way to describe the Islamic insurgents that operate in the three southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat - a region known as the Deep South.

Wow, I pity any governing body here in Thailand at present. So many problems to resolve. Its almost a lose/lose situation to try and correct problems that have been around for years.

Do they really think that Thailand will grant them independence or autonomy? Huh...just look across the border to Myanmar where 60 years of insurgency has kept entire parts of the country in poverty, civil war and without a future. That's the best these insurgents can hope for. Because Thailand will NEVER sacrifice any of their territory to them. Sorry insurgents, but you have already lost. Now do something useful like open schools for your children.

Of course the four provinces were not originally Thai territory but part of an Islamic caliphate. So what you mean to say is, "Thailand will never GIVE BACK any of the territory IT TOOK."

The Yingluck regime came the closest to getting the insurgents to the peace table by considering autonomy for the provinces. But the regime was side-tracked by the PDRC government protests and subsequent coup. The NCPO policy is that it will NEVER concede any Thai soverneignty to solve the conflict. Ironically, the NCPO was more than willing to deprive ALL Thais of their rights and liberty under the umbrella of its coup.

But but but the PM claimed the southern insurgents would not be allowed to continue to harm any Thais on his watch...... oh well.
