Downloaded a couple of applications packages, but what on earth do I do now?

I tried 'Add Applications' but it looks like it wants to search the internet, I already have the package.

I tried 'Archive manager' and it unpacked the files and put them somewhere but nothing else happened, how do I get the program to run?

I decided to try another package so I downloaded the 'tar.gz' file, I even found one which ended in 'installer.bin' but it doesn't seem to want to run either....

Maybe it would be easier to re-install Ubuntu and start again?

Or just give up.....

Really no reason to re-install Ubuntu. Read this site for more details on installing applications: http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

Also, the tar.gz type file is normally a compressed archive file similar to a zip file. It is also usually the complete source code for the application and will need to be built (compiled) and usually comes with a README file or INSTALL file for generating the application. However Ubuntu does not come with the tools and you will need to download the 'development packages' to do this.

If you need more help in how to build & install an application from the tar.gz file, just post here the question and will try to guide through the process.

I tend to use Package Manager (Kpackage) for installing debian packages that I download. It should be under the System menu. Find your downloaded package file using Find>open... and then click "install".

I think Kpackage in Kubuntu will only work with debian packages, so look for packages with the .deb extension when you are downloading.

Well I tried Kubuntu and didn't like it as much as Ubuntu so I re-installed Ubuntu and because I now have a modem it updated lots of stuff.

I also downloaded a suite of packages called 'free pascal' and 'Lazarus'. It was reccomended by a programming forum I participate in who said Free Pascal and Lazarus would let me recompile all my Delphi code in Linux.

I downloaded the packages, all RPM I am afraid and saved them on a memory stick while I restored Ubuntu. I went to the site suggested by tywais and it said I needed 'alien' to open theses packages.

I managed to load alien with Synaptic Package Manager but when I asked it to open ths package, nothing happened at all, it didn't say why or where, simply no reaction.

I tried to search for the applications I want with Synaptic but no luck.

I have them here, I spent two hours downloading them but I can't get at them!

So frustrating.....
