Baby girl just born

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I'm happy to say that my baby girl was just born last Saturday :) Now I have to get down to business so that I know I have all my important steps covered. I'm a dual citizen: British and Canadian however I would like to register the baby with my Canadian passport. The thing is that my work permit, my Thai non-b visas, stamps, etc. are ALL in my British passport. Would this cause any complications with the hospital and registration?

Second, I would like to do a DNA test. Although I'm 99% sure the baby is mine, I would still like to be 100% sure therefore I was wondering how is the best way of doing so in Thailand (without the partner knowing). I'm also not married to my Thai girlfriend.

My boss is suggesting i let my company know in order for tax sanctions, etc. however I'm registered with my British passport with my work. Can someone kindly suggest what would be the best step in going through this whole thing. Also, my Thai gf does not want to get married.

Regards,

Confused Canadian

Congratulations!

You do not "register the baby with your passport". The hospital will issue a certification that is turn to be used by the mother at the Amphoe (town's civil register) to register birth and obtain a Thai certificate of birth.

The Thai certificate will bring your name and nationality as father, however since you are not married to the mother, that does not make you the legal father by Thai law. That can be done only with a family court case.

Once you have the Thai birth certificate you can report the birth of your daughter at the British and/or Canadian embassy, for her to have her foreign nationality (or nationalities) recognized. Doing that at one consulate does not exclude that you do the same at the other too. Your immigration status does not matter - it is your daughter's right independently from any other circumstance.

For Americans to obtain the "report of birth abroad" ( which is the us doc that they give you which allows the child to obtain a passport)

you need prove that the child is urs,

For US ( and i am sure Canada) but best check with the Embassy;

This can be done

by photos of you an the mother thru her pregnancy, ( 2 of you together eating, at home, relaxing etc etc)

the BC with your name on it and

possibly 2 people attesting the child is urs

and in last case scenario a dna test.

as ur not married you will then need to go to Family court an obtain sole or joint custody of your child ASAP. If you don't, the mother can do whatever she wants with your child, ( ie hold it over you for $$$ or sending it to her parents to raise or not allowing you visitation rights.

I know this sounds harsh but its ur kid and you need to protect your rights and your child's.

sorry to say

BUT

If ur even remotely questioning the child is yours, you should not have had it.

For a US citizen in Thailand to prove the child is yours first step is to go to the US Embassy and they provide you with a DNA kit and doctor/lab you must submit it to. If confirmation is returned to them that the DNA samples match then they will process your child's passport. They chose the doctor/lab you don't.

Another congratulations from me! Having a baby is a big game changer. It certainly changed my life in ways I could never possibly imagine. Best of luck to you.

It was stated above that the procedure for the US requires a DNA test. This is not the case. They may request a DNA test. It is at their discretion. They did not require one when I applied for my son's Consular Report of Birth Abroad (his US Birth Certificate) or his passport. It is true that you do not get to select the hospital that will administer the DNA test if they do require you to have one. They only accept medical reports from a handful of hospitals. The hospitals on their list are generally the most expensive, first-tier hospitals you will find in Thailand. Bumrungrad is on the list. If you are going to get a DNA test without being required to do so by your embassy in order to obtain the paperwork required to pass on citizenship, I would suggest looking around for more reasonable hospitals. DNA testing a fairly common procedure these days. If you want to do it for your own piece of mind, I am sure it can be done for a fraction of the price that these first-tier, international standard, western hospitals charge. It is probably worth doing your homework if you want to keep some money in your pocket.

Again, congratulations and best of luck. I hope you are caught up on sleep because you probably aren't going to be getting any more of that for some time to come!!! LoL! I am kidding. My son slept through the night from very early on. Even when he did wake up to eat in the early days, his cries weren't loud enough to disturb me. Mom had it covered as she was breast feeding. Every child is different.

99 per cent is not enough, I was 99 per cent sure before, turned out I was wrong. Good luck with the tests mate. Your wise to check. I didn't but it became clear after a couple of years the child I was looking after wasn't mine.

They do not request a DNA test for every application for a consular report of birth. Only if the consular officer doing the interview suspects the child might not be the US citizens child do they ask for it.

The Americans that I'm aware of all have had to submit to the DNA test at the US Embassy in Bangkok.

I'm American with a Thai partner. We did not have to submit a DNA test. The process took about 5 minutes from entering the small room where they asked a few short questions and looked at our son briefly.
