Greatest living Englishman.

Featured Replies

Andy Murray or Rory mcilroy. There English when there winning

Just banter by the way

Yes, and Celtic were a British team when they won the European cup.

The greatest ever Scotsman Jock Stein.

The greatest ever Irishman. Michael Collins.

The greatest ever Welshman. No! not Tom Jones,

what about John Hartson?

Greatest Welshman would have to be Dylan Thomas

or probably most popular would be Harry Secombe (apologise for off topic slightly).

Without thinking twice, I would say Margaret Thatcher.

Sorry, she's dead, but still she is the greatest for me.

I agree on Maggie 100%. But one of the real greatest was Winston Churchill without him I really think the Germans would have got us.

Fink without the Americans they would have, not WC..........

let's be honest-without the Russians...

Max Boyce ?

Not off topic at all Charlie,

The Welshers are honorary Englishmen anyway, even if they do talk funny and have carnal relations with sheep..

Not "welshers" Souty, commonly referred to as "Taffs" , where men are men, and sheep are nervous (allegedly)

ps. before anyone jumps on this post, I am allowed to say it, as I am Welsh.

I must confess I am being a little hard on the "Taffs"

below is Wales greatest ever export as far as I am concerned, and any day she wants to kick in the old wrinkly Michael Douglas, she can come and live with Uncle Soutie...biggrin.png

Michael Morpurgo - children's author - War Horse.

Jonathan Miller - doctor, actor, director, raconteur

Nicholas Winton - humanitarian - got 1000s of Jewish kids out of Europe.

David Starkey - wit, pundit, polemicist and scourge of the Left

Theodore Dalrymple - doctor of medicine, writer, prison worker and intellectual ignored in the UK

Without any hesitation: Sir David Attenborough.

What is this ? Perhaps make me feel good English Day ? The greatest ever Englishmen.... My IQ count is extremely high but this one will take me some time to figure out....as I don't know of any.....at this moment

Idea purloined from another forum and aimed at English TVF members

However, all members welcome to comment but please keep it civil, this is a fun thread and not an excuse for English bashing or racism.

So, who would you say is the greatest living Englishman (or English woman), who is our greatest national treasure.

It impossible for me to put them in the correct order but my top 5 has to be:

Sir Ranulph Fiennes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranulph_Fiennes

Brian Blessed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Blessed

Sir David Attenborough http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Attenborough

Stephen Hawking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Hawking

Sir Steven Redgrave http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Redgrave

As you ask for a living person. There's none.

Only good Pommie is a dead one....???

i thought pommie was ...prisoner of mother england....not sure about the other m

Others have already nominated David Attenborough. He would get my vote too as GLE.

On his death, the GLE will be Sebastian Coe.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Coe

Success on the track; winning the nomination for London to host the Olympics ( the French thought they had it in the bag); and delivering a successful Olympics in 2012 ( plenty of people predicted it would fail). In time, he will become President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Without thinking twice, I would say Margaret Thatcher.

Err, no. Without the US army Corps the Germans would have "got you". In case you hadn't noticed you have been paying for it ever since. That's (one ) of the reasons why the UK is a basket case today.

Blessed and Fiennes are both amazing characters who have achieved so much. For me Attenborough tops them both. One of the most respected naturalists of our era. I am sure more people around the world would know of him than Blessed or Fiennes. Hawking is an inspiration even without being one of the top physicists of the last few decades.

I would add Richard Dawkins to the list.

Paul Calf.

Karl Pilkington biggrin.png

Rolf Harris.

Yep Gr8 on the inside but a 'kin Oz !

Nope. British. The ozzies disowned the creep and he's in ur gaol. ?

Yes. I would tap that.....if she asked nicely.

Catherine Zeta Jones comes from the same area as Anthony Hopkins, just near Port Talbot in South Wales.
