Re-Entry Options for Single Entry Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a 60-day single-entry Tourist Visa from Australia. I am looking at visiting Laos (for about a week) around the 30-day mark of my visa. I'll be doing a river crossing from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai, then catching a boat down to Luang Prabang. It'll be during the Songkran period. I will need to re-enter into Thailand again after my trip.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to come back under the initial 60-day visa? For example, are there re-entry permits available for Tourist visas? If so, how would I get one?

2. If I void my current visa by the border crossing, what are my options coming back into Thailand? Would I incur any further costs?

3. Does anyone know if there would be immigration closures on the Thai/Laos border during their New Year celebrations?

Any help you may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated, thanks for taking time to read my request. I wish you all a happy and safe time in Thailand!

1. You can get a re-entry permit that will keep the remainder of you 60 day permit to stay valid when you re-enter the country. You can get it at any immigration office for a fee of 1000 baht.

2. If you enter the country without the re-entry permit you will get a 15 day visa exempt entry that can be extended at an immigration office for 30 days for a fee of 1900 baht.

3. Border crossings do not close for any holidays. They are open 365 days a year.

You can get a re-entry permit at any immigration office. The cost will be 1,000 baht and you must provide a pass photo and copy of passport (ID-page and stamps) and your departure card.

Don't forget to fill in your re-entry permit number on the new arrival card when re-entering.

Immigration offices will be closed on holidays, borders are not closed. So get the re-entry permit now. (might require you give soe local address (hotel) to determine you apply at the correct immigration office).

Thank you ubonjoe and Mario2008!

Most helpful, I can plan my trip confidently now.

"1. You can get a re-entry permit that will keep the remainder of you 60 day permit to stay valid when you re-enter the country.."

And then you would also still be eligible to extend your stay by another 30 days at immigrations if you want, thus giving you a total of about 90 days from your initial entry on the tourist visa.
