Tour Buses are making Pattaya almost undriveable

There are many hotels located outside Pattaya city center so the Chinese and other "group tourists" uses big buses to get down to the speed boats and other places.

Not much to be done about it but it would be nice if they could start using some buses that don't pollute so much.

What you mean nothing can be done about?

25 years ago in the big tourist cities in Spain a tour bus would not be allowed in the city. They all needed to park outside the ring road and transport from there with local transport.

Why wouldn't the same be possible in Pattaya, where they could say that buses need to stay East of the railway road.

By the way the biggest problem is at night, when there are no jetski's, but a group of 10 Chinese get transported to Alcazar with a 50 seater bus, while 12 Chinese from another group get there with another similar 50 seater.

Well I agree with you, they should have a huge holding area for all buses just outside town and then transport the tourists down town in baht buses/trucks.

I wonder what city hall will think about that? Getting all big buses out of Pattaya would help a lot regarding traffic pile up.

"Think" and "city hall" cannot be used in one sentence.

I've seen nothing in my time here to indicate that City Hall has any grand plan for Pattaya at all - happy to hear otherwise, but it seems like the usual chaos whenever we get more people than usual on the roads. I dont just want tour buses banned from the city centre, I want those wombats with the baht buses blaring ads for Muay Thai etc diverted to Rayong and I'd seriously like to see all the connecting Sois between Third and Beach roads limited to commercial vehicles and bona-fide residents vehicles between 6am and 6pm and from 6pm till dawn I believe they should all be limited to pedestrians, emergency vehicles, residents and motorbikes. Totally unenforcable, of course, and I accept that it's straight out of the nanny state handbook, but if we're going to start banning tour buses why not take the bull by the horns and ban private vehicles from those narrow sois ? The sight of food vendors trying to manhandle their carts around parked cars with vehicles coming at them from both directions - Buakhow is particularly nasty - only adds to an already miserable experience for pedestrians in this town. The nanny state will never work here, but if the Thais dont want total gridlock they need to start looking at some changes - those sois arent going to magically widen anytime soon. The motorbike riders will simply take sillier risks than they already do to get around the 'carpark', but anyone who has visions of still driving a car in Pattaya in 10 years time might want to say a few prayers.

It is the low season but there seems to be more busses than ever!

The whole traffic pattern has been thrown askew by the Klang tunnel. Three more years of this---uh uh, I'm moving northern Chonburi.

The term low season refers to the old tourist model of thousands of European, American and Antipodean tourists descending on Thailand between Christmas and Easter and low-occupancy and deserted beaches for the rest of the year.

They are a minority now and the new tourist demographic started with the Russians on package tours which was pretty steady for over 5 years but vanished overnight a few months ago to be replaced by Chinese and Indians who were always there but in lesser numbers. There's always the post-Ramadan surge from the middle east which coupled with growing medical tourism, is quite significant in Bangkok.

Say what you want about tourism but it has become a much more dynamic industry with regard to who is going where and for all their faults, TAT seems to be getting a handle on these dynamics. It's just a pity that the 'old model' of herding them onto big buses in a city that can barely cope with its own residential and commercial traffic is still prevalent here.

I mentioned before that Aeon had opened a new supermarket on the sukhumvit near leam chebang we live in northern Pattaya and it takes us less time to get there than it does to big c sometimes with all the bloody tour coaches around .

Disagree strongly with your second paragraph. Pattaya is NOT a "tourist town". It's a sex addict town that inexplicably has some clueless Chinese and Russian tourists wandering around it pushing baby strollers or following a person holding a flag, all wondering how on earth they ended up there, and finally realizing they were scammed by unscrupulous tour operators.

You are absolutely right about Pattaya being nothing more than a sex addict town. My wife forced me into buying our Condo in Pattaya, and she wont leave me alone. Every morning, every night, in the shower, up on the tower, after a feed, after a swim, harassing me, so much so it's ungodly.... When does a man get a chance to sleep.....Not often in my house unfortunately...Those damned sex addicts..... sad.png

Casinos will be built in Pattaya. Will they be up on Pratamnak Hill or down the coast, south of Jomtien?

Picking up ocean view properties now at discount prices may look like a good move a few years from now.

LOL giggle.gif Well if you’re encouraging people to buy ocean view property in Pattaya because of prospective casino developments, at least I hope people bear in mind the fate of ocean fronted Revel Casino which took just 12 months from grand opening (even attended by Michelle Obama and her daughters ) to when they declared bankruptcy facepalm.gif

I think the "white tour buses" are connected to the city mafia; for they can speed down Beach Road as fast as they want; double park in the morning on Beach Rd to dump off the tourists; go down sois stopping traffic since they cannot make a complete turn in such a narrow space. You can have 3-4 police standing around totally ignoring the scene. You can have civilized drivers in cars stop for pedestrians to walk across major streets (such as Naklua or Pattaya North and the $%## drivers in the white tourist buses will not follow what the other cars are doing and continue zooming down their lane as if they are clueless about people crossing the street. I wonder how many people have been run over (injured or killed) from these idiots and the news never hits the papers.

Agreed regarding the roads and there driving of course thats why Thailand has the worst fatal accidents per capita in the world, No road awareness or common sense and training road awareness from school age is zero. So a dumb bus driver dont give a s--- hes not the 1 getting hurt and dont care about the vehicle, he dont own it. The mini buses are all kamikaze pilots. What started as a small fishing village in Thailand it is now a large city without the infrastructure. Prostitution has a lot to answer for lol. But businesses needs customers. Do you want them all to stop coming here or ghost town full up with empty shop houses and empty Hotels. What reason are we all living here for :) I am happy here it suits my life style. We all have an option where to live its not compulsory to live here sounds like half the green party are living here, You have an option live up the Jungle no thank you i will keep getting polluted and corrupted. I have lived here for 15 years and will carry on till im put in a box and burned. I prefer to die happy if its tomorrow i dont care iv had a good innings

Somebody needs to plant the seed in the minds of the Baht bus co-operative, they will get things done if they want to, ban all big buses from west of sukhumvit and ferry them in with Baht buses, but unfortunately they can be just as bad, but at least they could be working rather than double parking all over the place for nothing!

You probably think Santa Claus is real too eh?

You should visit Pattaya and educate yourself, Pattaya IS VERY MUCH a tourist town.

Thank you Sir for your succinct summary of what Pattaya really is. Everyone who does not appreciate world class sex, sea, sun, sand (well, maybe the sand part's a stretchtongue.png ), shopping, cinemas, golf, health care, food etc would do well to stay away!!

Why is it that people who go on about Pattaya are the ones who have never been further than 2nd road ,and have no idea what the "real" parts where "real" people live are like .?

Mr Zurf, trust me - you're wasting your keystrokes on the haters : they will continue to exhibit a pathological need to bash the town at every opportunity and nothing will change that. If I chimed into every thread in the Bangkok forum to bang on about the traffic and crime, I would be told where to go very smartly but Pattaya is an easy target. I dont like Walking St any more than some of the bashers, but I dont lump everyone in Pattaya in with the denizens of that relatively tiny corner of the town

I'm not clear why 80 people in 10 pickups makes for less traffic than one bus.

Driving, parking & and stopping needs to be better regulated.

I've been here for almost 12 months - live just off 3rd Road and the queue of tour buses waiting to cross Klang at around 7 last night was farcical. Full marks to the Thais for their willingness to provide transport to and from Pattaya, but like so many things in this town at the moment, supply grossly exceeds demand.

You are assuming that all tour buses are at full capacity, which most are not. So if you had a 40 people it would be half the pickups.

The main difference is that Baht bus are normal width normal length vehicles. They can easily navigate the larger and smaller roads. They are much easier to merge into a gap in traffic. The drivers do not pull out and block the roadway to cause complete gridlock. Drive from dolphin circle towards naklua about 200-300m in between 6-9 pm tonight and you will see why tour buses do not work on that stretch of road. Last night there were buses from both directions attempting to pull off on to a side soi. The side soi was already full of buses that could not pass each other. So everyone sat there for 5 minutes until they finally figured out how to pass each other.

If those were baht buses they could easily navigate down that soi. Also cars and motorbikes can see around and pass a baht bus that is stopped and is slightly over to the left (like they almost always do when stopping). The tour buses have to swing wide on the turns so you can not pass them on the right because there is no room. Is that sufficient explanation about traffic management?

Just not sure I'd want to get off a long-haul flight onto a bus at Swampy, spend 90+ minutes travelling to a depot where I was told to pick up my luggage and jam into a baht bus with a stack of others with fullsize suitcases for the final dash to the hotel - did it once at the North Pattaya terminal and it sucked. Even the minibuses they pick you up from the hotel with leave me feeling like a sardine. I realise that many of the buses I see whizzing up and down 3rd Road arent going anywhere near Swampy or DM, but how many people want to take a day trip in a baht bus ? I dont think this one is going away anytime soon.

I disagree with the characterization that OAT is the worst. IMHO, Pegas has that honor, followed by Sayama

Ahh, this reminds me I've hardly seen any Pegas buses in months. They used to clog the roads around Big C Extra. I see many OA buses, though, usually trying to crawl up my tailpipe on 3rd Rd. But Buakhao is pretty much my boundary, coming from the Darkside so I don't know what happens on 2nd or Beach.

Pattaya gets about 7 to 9 million tourists a year. Call it what you will, but that's a lot of tourists - and more than many countries get in total. And the number seems to be growing every year. That's partly due to the fact that Pattaya has "diversified" - with many tourist attractions aimed at families. Just drive from Pattaya to Bang Saray to get a taste of it. The coast from Sri Rasha to Rayong is slowly becoming Thailand's version of the French Riviera or the Spanish Costa Brava. A modern railroad from BK and Rayong is needed urgently.
