Canceling Extension

Featured Replies

I have a non-immigrant b work visa as I have been a teacher for a few years. My visa expires this Monday the 30th and is the same day as the end of my 90 extension as it is the day all the teachers sign the new contract for the upcoming year and go to the visa office to get their new work visa. I plan to not resign my teaching contract and just leave for Laos and get a multiple entry tourist visa there at the embassy and come back in a few days.

If this is the case and i leave the country on the same day that both my extension and visa expire I am assuming I wont have to cancel my extension or visa first as I have heard many people have had to do after quitting with some time still remaining on their extension. Is this correct???? It makes sense to me but sometimes things here dont.

I don't understand the part about your visa and your extension expiring on the same date.

If your visa was valid for one entry into Thailand, it lost its validity the day you arrived in Thailand. If it was valid for more than one entry, it became invalid the day you got your extension of stay.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

You seem to be calling reports of staying longer than 90 days in the country an extension which it is not.

I am certain your visa expired long ago and you are now on a one year extension of stay not a visa.

Even leaving on the last day of your extension Nong Khai immigration may want a letter to cancel your extension.

Tourist visas are not issued as a multiple entries they are issued as the number of entries alllowed. You can get a 2 entry tourist visa in Vientiane

Thanks so much for the fast replies. Yes, sorry I meant my 90 day report when I said extension. And I looked at my passport and apparently each year my I have been given a new year long extension of stay. You are correct. Its good to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about.

So with my 1 year extension and 90 day report on the 30th, if i leave to go to Laos, you are saying I still may need a letter? Just curious is this a new law, as my school always had a huge turnover rate and all the teachers just went to Vienteine and came back on a tourist visa in past years and no one was ever asked for anything as their extension of stay would automatically be cancelled when leaving the country anyway?? Never heard of anyone needing a letter until recently.

Not a law. It is just something that immigration at Nong Khai wants. You may be okay going out on the last day of your extension.

When I say all the teachers went to Laos in the above post I mean all of the teachers who quit at the end of the year or were not asked to resign their contracts.

Thanks!! Just curios there is no way they pull this at the airport right?

This whole thing of not letting you leave the country if you dont have a letter also seems slightly illegal to me.

It would not be asked for at the airport and most other border crossings.

Nong Khai has even been asking for letters from those with ED extensions.
