Pay taxes while awaiting work permit?

Featured Replies

Hello. While awaiting approval of a work permit application (which can take more than a year for NGOs), do you have to pay taxes on that income? Will it be retroactively taxed once a WP and Thai tax number are granted?

If not, should that income be reported to your home country instead? The income is from a third country source.

Thanks.

Just for my information.

Why would a work permit application take "more than one year " ?

Which visa is being used and for how long is it valid ?

should you be working unless you have an approved wp? i have heard that if you have submitted the docs it may be ok but....one year, i have never heard of a wp taking more than a couple of weeks max to process - even with weekends. usually a few days.

I have a Non Imm B. But yes, for NGOs, it currently takes a looonnngg time to process

Without a work permit you are not allowed to work, so would because of that not pay taxes.

1 year application time sounds fishy to me.

Single or Multi Entry "Non Imm B" ?

As Mario observes a one year+ application time for a WP is VERY fishy tale !

Which "NGO" are you (illegally) working for ?

It is possible to get a tax ID number and pay taxes without a work permit.

But if you are working to earn the income you are declaring the work you are doing would be illegal.

My WP (not an NGO) needed 1 week to get. But they told me before 2 weeks.

1 year sounds strange.

You can't work (and therefore pay taxes) until you have your WP in your hand.

I have seen it posted that the revenue department will gladly accept your tax payment for work performed illegally, but more likely your employer will happily withhold the taxes from your salary without remitting the corresponding amount to the revenue department.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

As others have noted, that is a sure indication that you are begin taken for a ride, and made work illegally while the employers will do nothing toward a work permit.
