Does it give way at all or feel unsteady? Might be a torn ligament I had that about a year and have ago required surgery tho.

Go see Dr Panya in the orthopedics department at Bumrungrad - Fixed my knee. And knows his shit.

Dr Bhunyat in Samitivej, he did my torn cartilage this year, it was healing fine till I twisted it and no bung again.

You have 2 recommendations here of 2 docs in 2 hospitals, I would go get 2 opinions. If the first wants an mri done, do it, but then keep the film and say you are going back to your home country and may need to have it looked at there, but will be back in los soon. Then you can take them to the other hospital. I think the films should be yours anyway, but I understand when the hospital wants to keep them for the above reason, but also so they are not lost or damaged when they need them. These days they use digital mostly anyway.

Well, anybody else have any experience with torn knee problems.

I had another mri done 2 days ago.....need another operation according to doc, torn meniscus again, worse than first time back in May.

Want a second opinion this time.

I went to a hospital out in Thonburi that the doctor was recommended for orthopedics. Now nothing wrong with old, but this guy was very old, that could be good for experience I guess. Anyway he just prescribed drugs and said come back if not work.

The hospital was old and thai style, not really where I would like to be unless I had no choice of course.

One thing also, these country guys know how to charge, blatant ripoff they are for what they do.

Doctors fee was 60baht, nurse fee 40baht, facility fee 40baht. Medicine however was 900b :o

Sounds like a problem I have/had earlier this year. I had an X-ray and a consultation with a specialist at the BNH hospital who estimated that my knee cartilage had thinned 10 years faster than my true age (52).

Recommendations:

1. Leg excercises to build up muscles and improve flexibility

2. Take Glucosamine Sulphate, Chondroitin etc. supplements to build up cartilage (best to buy overseas as much more expensive here)

3. Avoid high impact sports

6 months later definite improvement, can still go jogging (slowly) but still some knee clicking when I stand up from a seated position.

Recommend you go to one of the large hospitals and get it checked out (cost with X-ray should be about 3,000 baht based on my experience and results available while you wait).

Good luck (you're not dead yet)

A little update....

I had a knee op for torn meniscus in May at Samitivej, stayed overnight 2 nights. Now insurance paid for it, but i saw the bill and was 280k.

I have to have the same op again as it has come back, torn again, or same one, seems to be torn again.

Anyway, same doc in Samitivej ordered another MRI, this time he said it is torn from front to rear, much bigger. I think I know how this happened, but could not bring myself to tell him as he did tell me not to do anything out of the ordinary for at least 6 months, but i did and oh well....shit happens.

Anyway, he says that I have 2 choices, not which choice he recommends, but i have 2 choices and that is to remove the disc completely and then have arthritis set in some time in the future no doubt and from the internet research, this could be a couple to 20 years and varying degrees of pain.

His other option was to repair again, but his arguement here was that if it did not heal in the first place, it is unlikely to again. But he did not have my inside information.

What I did not like was his method of just leaving it with me and told me to come back in a few weeks and decide.

I took the MRI films to Bumrungrad for a second opinion and saw doc Panya as previously recommended in here somewhere. His opinion was that I did not have a choice, firmly stated and I must admit had the same thoughts as myself, that I must have it repaired. At least if it is repaired it may heal well, if removed you have no chance and at my age, still had a while to be hoping about.

Secondly he stated that it would be a day procedure only, no overnight stay, i told him Samitivej wanted me to stay 2 nights, he just chuckled. But lastly was the price quoted of 80k for the same operation and his rather pleasant nature, he even laughed at my jokes.

So, seems Samitivej, although well known to be expensive, is just ridiculous.

Also, does anyone know a good site, or somewhere locally to buy this stuff and are there any problems with sending it in by mail if bought on websites etc ??

Had an operation yesterday, now my bum hurts, only problem is they operated on my kneee, why would my bum hurt ??

Could I have been violated on the operating table...by who ?? doubt it would have happened there as there are many nurses and doctors around....unless it is a group thing, or maybe they are making dirty movies....keep an eye out for "operation backdoor" on the illegal porno stands....

But if that did not happen, when else could it have ?? only time would have been between the OR and the recovery room....maybe it was that orderly that looked at me sweetly as the lights went out in the OR....maybe he wheeled me to recovery and sodomised me in the elevator, hit the stop button and rolled my lifeless body over and took advantage of me.

I feel ashamed, violated and cheap.

What should I do.

Well, all i can say either the doctor at Bumrungrad was better than the last one, or the drugs are much much better !

I had the same op in May at samitivej and needed it again after damaging it.

Basically this one was nothing like the last. I was in the hospital at 5.30am and operation was at 6am. I walked out of there at 9.30am, I could stand on it pretty much immediately with the use of crutches. The big difference was that there was no pain, last one in May I could not walk for 2 days, they kept me in hospital for 2 nights and the pain in the knee afterwards for a week or so was a lot. Now there is none, in fact today i got a bike up the street to do some things and returned home.

So is it the drugs ?? I do not know yet.

Bad news was that they had to remove the meniscus instead of repair it as it was severely torn.

I asked the Doc afterwards why I had no pain compared to the last time, he said "I did not operate the last time !"

Lets see.

This is now the 4th time i have been knocked out and kind of like it, I like trying to stay conscious as long as possible, last 2 times I have increased it a little bit, this time I managed to say bye bye as the eyes rolled closed.

I was astonished to see Dr Panya's name mentioned. Actually, I wasn't, he is a very proficient knee surgeon, but he has an apalling manner about him. I had an arthroscopy last year (same as a previous poster admitted at 5.30 surgery at 6). My problem was that I reacted badly to the anaesthetic. Neither he nor his anaesthetist were concerned that I was vomiting copiously - he told me I was imagining it even as I chundered on his desk.

As I said, technically he is very good, his personal skills could do with a brush up but he does give you a CD of the surgery to amaze your friends with

I'm somewhat amazed that some doctors happily remove a patient's entire meniscus without ever mentioning the repercussions and consequences of such action down the line, especially now when there are other options available such as collagen meniscus implants, allograft implants, or even lab-grown implants from the patient's own cells.

Granted such surgeries are not yet available in Thailand, but they are available in Europe, Japan, Australia, Singapore, and S. Korea (at least that's what I've been told by some doctors and read online).

I'm wondering if anyone has had such surgeries (CMI) outside of Thailand.
