Haze could return in North, as many cornfields still to be cleared
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Up to 1.1 million rai (176,000 hectares) of cornfields with stubs are awaiting clearing - or burning - in the North, Natural Resources and Environment Minister General Dapong Rattanasuwan revealed yesterday.

Dapong said the haze in the North had dropped thanks to measures by various agencies to cut contributing factors, particularly clearing fields by burning.

However, up to 1.1 million rai of cornfields needs to be cleared, he said, so the ministry has urged provincial natural resources offices and district officials to talk with villagers. If necessary, they may have to arrange a timetable for fields to be burned gradually to minimise the environmental impacts, he said.

The minister said the haze might come back during the hot and dry month of April, so agencies would have to adapt their measures to tackle the problem, which may include having soldiers to help firefighters extinguishing bush fires by scaling down from helicopter to control fires in areas that are difficult to access.

So it was not last week rain that cleared the Haze?

Apart from CP, I heard that much of the land being cleared belongs to a property bureau that cannot be discussed.

"having soldiers to help firefighters extinguishing bush fires by scaling down from helicopter to control fires in areas that are difficult to access." Using poorly trained (in fighting fires) soldier's to fight fires in high risk situations is not a good idea. One would hope they do some intensive training to give the soldier's a reasonable chance of coming home.

mad.gif.pagespeed.ce.z6RtN005qsrqHQ4roTc so the "govt."concedes defeat on the issue. ....profits over people every time.

Like I have said, a few days of strong sunshine after the rain and the burning resumes.

Of course it was, and this announcement makes clear that the various agencies don't intend to do anything to prevent further burning. At least they are no longer attempting to continue the preposterous "it's coming from other countrys" line. As has already been alluded to, this burning will be impossible to stop.

Instead of burning the fields has anyone given a thought to mowing down the stalks Then shred them soak with water cover let nature take it's course, the result being you just made mulsh which could be used to fertilize the land at really no extra cost. Oh side effect is fresh air no haze.

Oh there is this thing called a combine which not picks the corn it cuts the stalks to be gathered to help renew the ground of course it is called crop rotation.

Notice to potential tourists.

Keep away from Northern Thailand.

ehhhh..... get off lazy butts and plow vines & shuck under or dry for feed. the whole world does this. why it is not done here is thainess at its worst :-)

This is crazy. I've been in corn-growing regions in USA ... including Iowa and Kansas where more corn is grown than anywhere in the world. And not once have I seen a corn field being cleared by fire.

The solution to the haze problem is easy. Just outlaw burning of corn fields and punish the offenders.

.....SO whats stopping the government from contacting these farmers and tell them not to burn the corn fields or

their land will be forfeited under rule 44, disobeying law of the land. Grinding the stocks up and plowing it under will return nutrients to the soil. Burning does not improve the soil at all.

but but but the gov't agencies cloud-seeded the smog to make it rain...The clean air and ensuing happiness was a present from Uncle Too, don't you know.

"Dapong said the haze in the North had dropped thanks to measures by various agencies to cut contributing factors"

What a crock of sh%t!... the haze dissipated because a rain front moved thru! coffee1.gif

And I was looking for a topic in which I could mention APRIL the first. Had the rain so now time to light up

And lo and behold, they continue to accede to the farmers' wishes. When will this government, which doesn't rely on votes at all, order the farmers to abstain from burning fields and instruct them to talk with the agencies about alternatives?

serious question, who can answer:

is this GMO crop ? (monsanto cancer herbicide on & in it ?)
