I have had a persistent dull throbbing pain in my right side, about 1/2 inch under my rib cage and directly in line with my nipple.

When I stand up for any period of time that pain seems to transfer out of my back and about 3 inches higher than the nagging pain.

Two months ago I went to a doctor, had blood tests, urine test and ultrasound and they suspected kidney stones, though they couldn't find one. They gave me a months worth of medicine to stop crystal formation.

This pain is still there and is persistent and worse when I am standing.

Is there something else I should check, advise welcome and thanks.

in line with the nipple....so front side?

In my uneducated guess the kidney are more on the back side (please correct me if I am wrong).

I am not the person to guess something but one question:

Does it change with what you eat or drink? Lets say in the morning before eating anything is it the same?

No, food or drink doesn't seem related. The pain that radiates out of the right side of my back goes from mild when first standing to nearly unbearable after 30 minutes or so, but reduces significantly once I sit.

But the pain in the front side seems to remain as a dull inner throbbing pain always present.

This is very unlikely to be pain associated with kidneys but it is typical pain for conditions affecting the liver.

Not enough info given to venture a guess as to what it may be but can be anything from a gallstone to an infectious process.

Conditions affecting the diaphragm on that side may also be on the list but this will usually be aggravated by breathing.

Best to have more investigations specific to the liver..

I haven't had a "drink" for over a month and probably had 10 beers in the last few months and the situation hasn't improved but I'm sure a no alcohol policy is good advise under the current situation.

As for fats, I eat very little that I am aware of as I only eat one cooked meal a day and the rest is either fruit or cereals.

I also run everyday, which is actually less painful than when I walk.i also noticed that when I am standing upright the pain in the back region is worse than if I hunch my body over, which seems to relieve some pain.

Just a follow up on this post. I went to Samitivej and had an ultra sound of my liver, plus numerous liver blood test results analysed which showed my liver seems fine ( relief) but the pain is still there. So I have been referred to a gastro specialist as the kidney also looked fine and urine and kidney tests came back as normal. The doctor assumes it might be intestine or something.

In another post on this forum, you also mentioned lung issues that showed in an Xray.

Many years ago I had similar symptoms (sharp side pain) and it turned out to be Pleurisy. I had to have fluid removed periodically from the pleura by needle.

I'm not suggesting this is what you have but maybe it should be considered.

Thanks Dave. Yes I did the X-ray yesterday as part of a wellness package which included just about every test imaginable. All of the tumour markers were low and normal so I am assuming the lung thing isn't cancer or anything dangerous, but the right side pain could in some way be related. When the pain first occurred I was at high altitude, over 14 000 feet and it was pretty cold, so maybe something occurred due to elevation. My lung X-ray before I went was certainly fine.

Given the abnormal chest Xray and location of the pain, this could indeed be related. Be sure to mention it when you see the pulmonologist.
