SOngkran period is like the Big Zoukout party for the Thais in Thailand especially the village areas. Normal days, what can they enjoy with? Nothing exceptionally. Only Songkran, everyone (kids/family/friends) all will really enjoying themselves. This year seems many places have ban unlike previous years. You can't see all trucks lining up splashing water, people dancing, high music with great feelings.

Yes there are still parties around but is it really fun?

I'm not being funny, but you seem to be saying that Thai's, mainly in villages, have such boring and meaningless lives that they need Songkram simply to provide some fun once in a while. I often suspected this and find it rather tragic - if true of course.

In my experience living in the village before, I saw the Thai villagers have not much stuff to enjoy. Maybe once a while the festival markets come, with mini Thai concert. If the concert is Superstar, you can see many people coming to see the concert. If not, just the so-so crowd. And festival market is not round the clock and not at every village area. But Songkran is different. Every person from baby, kids, teeenagers, adult, elderly are participating in it. If you visit the village area during Songkran period, you can see all the family gathering. Family members from city maybe schooling or working will come back for during the songkran period. They will have a big family gathering, they pray for the nation, for family , for parents, for everyone. They will have the tie the white strings session religious ceremony. They pray respect for the elders and in return the elders will give their blessing to the youngers. They will have family party, drinks, dance and family bonding. After the family gathering, they will have outing to have the big water fight at the "fighting ground". Everyone are joyful including childrens, rushing eagerly grabbing their water guns, topping up their barrels (especially with ice in it) the people love it the most. All hopping up to the pickups, standby for the water fight. You can see all their faces. EVeryone are happy. There is no other festival you can see almost all the people so excited and cheerful. WHat else festival you can find in the village areas? Buddhist praying ceremony, school events,etc ? IMO nothing else can beat the Songkran festival.
