Hi. I'm trying to figure out if people have personal liability insurance here in general and also if yes, which ones are common/recommended. I believe in some European countries it is mandatory and I currently don't have one so I feel a bit exposed with out one.

I tried finding some info on the topic by searching the forums, but all the topics I found seemed really dated.

I'm not sure whether it's common or not but I have personal liability cover as part of my house and contents policy with AIG. I didn't request it, it's part of the policy which maybe implies that liability cover is common.

Not a litigious society as in the West and since lawyers will not work on a contingency there are few "personal" injury lawsuits filed

A waste of money IMHO, take the savings and increase the amount of cover

Thanks for the responses. My liability insurance was not expensive in Europe. Something like 400THB per month. It was also mandatory though, so maybe the government was backing it somehow.

The type of scenario I'm thinking of is say if I were to accidentally cause a lot of damage to some other party (accidental fire resulting in the loss of a home for example), then even in a society that is not very letigious by nature, I could see somebody taking legal action just to keep from becoming homeless. Another example would be a car crash that somehow damages other property by the side of the road that is very expensive. Just something extreme that would be hard to cover for a single individual.

Premium on my policy is the same. The personal liability component is bundled with the house & contents, whether you want it or not.

Because there are very few liability cases filed here in Thailand

Now, if someone would give me an insurance policy to protect me from defamation suits I would be first in line to purchase it

Car accidents are excluded from nearly all personnel liability insurances.

I think you may need to take out an extra policy for liabilities resulting from driving accidents, but it definitely also exists in the UK for example.

That's the very common and in many countries compulsory 3rd party insurance.
