I'd like to get a new passport simply because mine is filling up with too many visas/stamps. I only see information about lost, damaged, or stolen passports online. Does anyone know if I'm able to replace for a new one "just because?" If anyone has done this before, I'd love to hear your experience.

Many thanks.

Yes indeed go us embassy they give extra pages, also if they have outreach sessions in your neck of the woods this is another way to save a trip to bangkok.

I got a new one a few months ago. You can fill out the form online and print it out. http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/renew.html

Don't sign it until you're in front of a consular officer.

You can make an appointment at the embassy or CM consulate or just attend one of the consular out-reach visits. You need your old passport, $110 or baht equivalent, photo attached to application.

If you apply at one of the outreach programs you have the option of paying for EMS delivery, you hand in the application, the fee and the old passport and they will return both passports and letter for immigrations by mail.

OR If you apply at one of the outreach programsI and you want to pick up the new passport at the embassy & hold onto your old passport while waiting, you give them the application, the fee and a photocopy of the ID page of the old passport. They'll send you an email when to collect the passport ... I think mine was ready in under 10 days. Take a copy of the email and your old passport (you don't need an appointment to collect the new passport). They will cancel the old passport and give you the new one and a letter to give immigrations when you transfer stamps to the new passport.

If you get extra pages, better be prepared to pay $82 for the extra pages. Better in the long run to get a new passport for $110? . Depends on how much time left on your passport.

No more extra pages after January 1, 2016. If you have them added now they will give you 75 pages (3 inserts) for the same 82 USD.

Just to note that I received my new US Passport in the last few months via the Consular Outreach/ return by EMS method. Painless.

If time is an issue, note that pages are added at the Embassy, while new passports now come from the U.S.

As mentioned, you won't be able to get extra pages added after January 1, so even if you get a new passport it's a good idea to have the pages added before then if you travel a lot.

US Consulate Chiang Mai says 15 day turn around. I had mine in 7 days and thats normal for them.

The Consular outreach is the best bet. Here in Phuket was in very nice hotel meeting room, orderly, no hassle. One consul officer to make official signatures and seal but aided by several very efficient assistants. Bring application form (dowload or they have at the visit), two photos (specifications on the application form), old passport and US$110 or 3630 baht (exact change needed). Can mail to your home here via EMS or can pick up at Consulate in BKK. I got my new one back in about 8 days after the submission at visit here in Phuket. Highly recommend the EMS mailback service.

What do you mean "the new kind"? You can get extra pages, up to three sets, added to any valid U.S. passport today, whether it has a chip or not.

But you cannot get extra pages added after January 1, 2016, whether you have a passport issued before or after that date.

Obviously you cannot have pages added to the new passport card!

Seriously, you plain don't know what you're talking about when you say, "You can only get extra pages for old passport and not the new kind." You're just confusing people here.

When you apply outside the U.S., your new passport IS now automatically the larger size with more pages. BUT you can still add sets of new pages to the larger passport, until January 1.

Incorrect. The US Embassy is advising if you apply for a new passport now, which is 52 pages, you may also apply for the all three inserts, total of 75 pages for the same 82 USD.
