Hi all,

I'm currently half way through my one year immigration O multi entry visa, I'm getting tired of leaving Thailand every 90 days and returning. So given that I'm married to a Thai lady and I'm 70 years old can I apply for a retirement visa any time or do I have to wait for my current visa to expire. I'm not far from the Changwattana office, so that is a far better option for me. I was given the wrong information when I visited the Thai Consulate in Melbourne, the manager told me I could go to Changwattana for my 90 day report which later I found incorrect. Thanks.

You can apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement during the last 45 days of any of your 90 day entries from the visa. You do not have to wait for your visa to expire.

You will need 800k baht in the bank for 60 days or proof of 65k baht income or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht.

Thanks guys,

Is 42 days prior to the visa entry expiring the law or is that flexible. I've always preferred depositing 400,000 baht in my Thai bank account, should the 400K be deposited 60 or 90 days prior to making the application. Thanks again.

You can apply for the extension up to 45 days early or on the last day if you want to.

The 400k baht only needs to be in the bank for 2 months on the date you apply for the extension.

I did it 44 days early like Joe have told you. And the Immigration do the extension from the date your permission to stay ends. So you don't lose anything. I got 1 year and 44 days until I have to do my next extension.

if you check the OP specifically asked about a retirement extension.

He was provided with the correct information.

Where exactly do you live, as many people who say I live near Chaeng Wattana are not aware that their actual office to visit is Nonthaburi, the border line is the Khlong that runs by the side of Dhuraki Bundit University.

400K is for an Extension based on marriage, this means if you ever get divorced your reason to stay is gone, the OP is asking about Retirement Extension which is 800K, please know the rules correctly

Check your stamp and you see Thai Wife, also your wife had to go with you, for extension based on Retirement no wife needs to go with you and the office issue you one year straight away, no going back after 30 days.

Somewhere along the path you have become very confused.

You may well have got an extension of stay based on being married to a Thai but you most certainly did not receive an extension based on retirement with only 400K in the bank !

As has been said, OP received the correct info.

An extension based on retirement requires 800,000 in the bank (2 months for the first time, 3 months for every extension thereafter), an extension based on being married to a Thai female requires 400,000 in the bank for 2 months, an extension based on being married to a Thai male requires no money in the bank.

For the extension of stay on a non-o based on marriage, the 400k needs to be in the bank for a minimum of 60 days (2 months). If the extension of stay is based on retirement he will need 800k regardless if he is married to a Thai or not.

As already stated, a 400,000 THB minimum bank balance for marriage extensions only needs to be seasoned for at least 2 months for the first annual extension. But the minimum seasoning period for subsequent annual extensions is, as you say, 3 months.

Ditto with an 800,000 THB minimum bank balance for retirement extensions.

For an extension of stay based upon marriage the 400k baht only has to be in the bank for 2 months for every extension.

From clause 2.18 of Police Order 327/2557

"(6) In the case of marriage to a Thai woman, the alien husband must earn an average annual income of no less than Baht 40,000 per month or must have no less than Baht 400,000 in a bank account in Thailand for the past two months to cover expenses for one year."
