Tropical storm warning for North and North East of Thailand

Featured Replies

Wrong terminology used. The warning is about Summer Thunderstorms. Tropical Storms are rotating storms generated over water.

Why do they insist on saying these storms are being created by high pressure systems. High pressure is stable air, low pressure is unstable air. Storms are the arrival of low pressure air.

Looks like we're gearing up for a decent storm in Pattaya Wednesday morning. Not sure what the wind speed is, but it's definitely more than a strong sea breeze.

Maybe a translation problem. Presumably the report would be issued in Thai. Maybe just saying พายุ paa-yu, and whoever translates goes for "tropical storm."

Yesterday the temperature at don mueang airport weather station was 41.4 Celsius. Very hot, I live not far from there and at 9:30pm last night we had a powercut. Everyone left their houses and sat outside on the street. Thankfully the power was back on after just 20 minutes.

Had the spell of very high temperatures continued we might have gotten a few more of those 'power losses'.

Looking at the weather forecast (for Bangkok) we seem saved by the bell. 31-33C daytime with light rain to rain showers the next five days. Will clear the dust a bit. Of course instead of complaining about temperature people might start complaining about a bit of flooding and truly amazing traffic jams wink.png

Pa yu just means 'storm' there are many different kinds of storm and no one would translate 'pa yu' as tropical storm.

The correct Thai word is 'pa yu sohn ron'

You must be joking. Have you actually read any news items translated from Thai to English. Translations are all over the place ... and I know of several Thais who use พายุ for virtually anything from heavy rain to destructive winds.

พายุ paa-yú n.

storm (weather)
