Featured Replies

i would like to talk with some american women married to thai men and living in thailand. my husband, of 23 years, and will most likely be retiring in thailand.i have lived there before and loved it. i must have been thai in another life because i adore any and all thai.however, when i was there before, 10 years ago, i missed the company and friendships with other american women.can anyone tell me how they are doing and what they do there. i would like to possibly develope some friendships before i go.

Welcome to the forum, I must've missed this one Nokgow, Sorry!

I am also an American woman with a Thai husband and have been living in Thailand for 15 years. Where were you living before? I think it depends on what you are looking for and where you live. I don't have many farang female friends but that is mainly because alot of the girls who come to our island and get a thai boyfriend are what I call, "flavor of the month". They are here for a month or two, maybe even 6 and then go back home. Perhaps they will be back in a year, perhaps not. But, never the less, as soon as she is gone he has another one on the string. Also, most of these girls are here to party and have a fun holiday, we don't have much in common and I am not particularly interested in getting involved in these girls lives and problems. I suspect, however, that other places with less of a 'party reputation' would attract a much more stable long-term female. But then again, maybe not!

Let me know if you have any more specific questions, perhaps I can help.

dear sbk:thank you so much for your reply.i have been very busy at work and with my daughter graduating from high school and anothe a freshman, so i have not had time to log on. my husband's home is by the airforce base, on the other side of the airport from bangkok. i would imagine it is much easier for women like us to get around now than it was then. the traffic only allowed time to make a 1 distination trip a day. also, my husband's uncle was the prime minister at the time and all his uncles were vip's in the airforce, so the girls and i could not go out alone.we would have to wait for someone to take us anywhere we went. being a very self sufficient and independent person this was hard. you said you live on an island, so i'm guessing you live in the south. it's very beautiful there, i'm looking forward to returning.hope to hear more about your daily life there soon.

sbk is a winner nokgow. She'll set you right. Good luck

Why Dr PP, what a sweet talker :o

But thanks for the vote of confidence!

Nokgow, sounds like a very high-class lifestyle compared to my simple life on the beach! I agree with you, it's hard enough being an independent person living here normally, I don't think I would like to be quite so high-profile!

However, that said, I know where you mean, my brother-in-law used to live in Bang Kapi and the traffic that way is horrendous. I don't think it has improved much out in the 'burbs frankly. The skytrain downtown makes getting around much easier now, and I imagine (though haven't been on it yet) that the subway will be the same. Bangkok, frankly, has improved in many ways in the past ten years, I find it much cleaner and much easier to get around. But then, I don't live there and can't really imagine ever living there. If you do retire in Thailand talk your husband into moving out of Bangkok, preferably someplace a bit more relaxed!

Maybe a permanent rental of one of your bungalows perhaps sbk

Ah, but you see, Dr PP, they are not my bungalows. After all, I am only the farang wife, you would have to ask the hubby! :o

[FONT=Arial] Dear nokgow, If you live in Nonthaburi near the Int'l School Bangkok, there are many neighborhood groups, for example coffee mornings, bridge, sightseeing, etc. There is a neighborhood newsletter called "Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach" with lots of things to do. This is for all the neighborhood, not just Americans with Thai husbands, but there are a few of us around! For things to do to keep busy, there's shopping, learning Thai, vacationing around Thailand, visiting the Thai relatives :o etc.!!! I'm sure you would like retiring here. Good luck! P.S. Does anyone listen to FM 102.5 in Bangkok ? It's great!

visiting the Thai relatives :o

:D Heh, heh.... know all about that one! Fortunately I have now been around long enough it is no longer so necessary. Still attend myriad weddings, funerals and house openings tho.

lightning struck and took out all electronics, therefore have not been able to log on until now. thank you all so much for your input.we will be retiring there. we will come and then decide where.we have the family home by the air force base and one condominium in Thana City(hope i spelled correctly). My husband does well in the city situation,as he does here in Dallas, Texas.I on the orther hand am more of an "on golden pond",gardening, bird and wildlife watching type person. So, even if we must base ourselves from the already established homes we will certainly vist your area and hopefully meet at the locations you so kindly gave me. i would certainly love that.i'm trying to get my girl's to attend Dulwich College so maybe we can come sooner.i'll try to stay with the forum more often now that i have the computor to do so.thank for your reply.
