Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has blamed what appeared to be inaccurate weather forecasts on rumors spread on online social media.

Wanchai Sak-udomchai, director general of the Meteorological Department, said inaccurate weather forecasts have recently been widely shared by online social networkers and those who shared the wrong information claimed that got they it from his department.

Wanchai said sharing of the rumors prompted the public to perceive the department of being inaccurate in its weather forecasts.

Wanchai urged the public not to believe the rumors on weather forecasts, especially those about natural disasters.

He said the public should believe only information directly from the department's website and the department also plans to release more weather information via its own social media channels.

The director general said his department has received a budget of Bt212 million for upgrading its weather forecast computer system so that the weather information would be more accurate.

He said Information and Communications Technology Minister Porchai Rujiprapha instructed the department to improve the computer system so that the weather information would be at least 90 per cent accurate.

Regarding to the current weather condition, Wanchai said heat wave would return to hit the country and the hottest weather would happen early May. By the end of April, the mercury would rise above 40 Celsius degree in most parts of the country, he added.

He said the weather would be hotter than last year in early May before rains would come in the third week of May.

For Monday, the Meteorological Department forecasts that Uttaradit will have the highest temperature in the North with 44.5 Celsius degree while Udon Thani the highest in the Northeast with 43.9 Celsius degree. Kanchanaburi will be the hottest province in the Central with 43.5 Celsius degree.

The web site needs work, especially on updating the weather radars, they are often hours old,or even days old, compare this to the Australian met site, were the radar is in real time.

This and they just don't work. The eastern coverage sucks. Rayong radar is always broken, Hua Hin is off a lot and at the moment, while it shows as operational, for the last few days has been clear even when overlapping BKK radar shows strong storms.

As for the forecasts, they change constantly from day to day, So while he 'claims' other sites are using misinformation, they may just be using information that was current at the moment they copied it.

Personally, I don't think the people at the Thai meteorological department has a clue.

A perfect example of this was last week as the media including TV was predicting Tropical storms attributed to The Meteorological Department, but in looking at their website, no such warning had been given, they had predicted summer thunderstorms not tropical storms, two completely different things, one is associated with a low pressure the other to do with high pressure

Er I refer to the Thai meteorological data, amongst others and there is nothing wrong with the information given, the web site might be a bit clunky for sure, but the data is sound, the problem is, the vast majority of people don't know what they a looking at as regards the data, that's half the problem.

He said ....rains would come in the third week of May.

Hello. Rains have already been doing their thing. It's rained about 7 days already this month, about 10 cm. The best predictor of rain is looking up at the sky, and it's 212 million baht cheaper than how the bureaucrats do it (even tho they're wrong half the time).

"For Monday, the Meteorological Department forecasts that Uttaradit will have the highest temperature in the North with 44.5"

What a coincidence! The highest recorded temperature ever was 44.5, coincidentally in Uttaradit. Crikey, we're about to repeat the all time record! Never mind this has been one of the least hot "hot seasons" so far.

Seriously though, forecasting the weather in Thailand is just a shot in the dark. 80% of the year it's more or less "widely scattered to scattered thundershower with gusty wind in some area" which is of course very misleading not to mention it'll probably be sunny most of the time before and after the 30-minute thundershower ;-)

I have no such problem. I rely on The Weather Channel! Super accurate forecast.

The Weather Channel, using data from . . . The Thai meteorological dept?

Partly, but satellites are taking over nowadays. Thailand is investing more into computer calculation, while the west is investing out of it.

Social media for shitstorm, social media for hype, the weather is as it is, quiet unpredictable, especially on the long run. Snowfall in Hua Hin, good for a big bet, but beginning of last week it was really hot, as predicted. Maybe social media can be somewhat helpful in Nepal now, connecting people could be an issue. But quarreling about the weahter forecasts, especially about the long term ones?

Wunderground Bangkok, which was bought by its main competitor, TheWeather Channel. So, they may be one in the same, but I still use Wundergroud.

Maybe these internationally accepted satellite weather forecasters are the social media being complained about.
