One of the troubles with electric cars is : In a very hot country like thailand , a lot of battery power goes to the airconditioner !

In a cold to very cold country , you can't get any heat from the engine and it uses a sh-tload of power to get the car warm...

Cheers... good point. How do those hybrids work at traffic lights. No A/C ?

You have to get out and plug it into the traffic light.

Just got back from US, saw one in display room. Interior definitely some Italian design guru to take a look at it.

To save on battery, in many upmarket electric cars they come with heated seats and stearing wheel. Instead of heating all the ambient air in the cabin people just heat the seats and wheel as it uses allot less power.

Forget it in TH! From Naklua to South Pattaya and back (5km), you need 2 hour. You Tesla will be out of power before you reach the target

First off, the Tesla is not a hybrid. It is 100 percent electric. Hybrids have a dual power source.

A hybrid will run the a.c. on the battery until it runs low, then the engine will kick in. In practice this almost never happens. A.C. will go a good 10 minutes on a small hybrid battery.

In comparison, the tesla battery is huge. The hybrid battery will power the car about 2km at moderate speed. A Tesla's range is in excess of 400km, and it has amazing power.

Total rich people's toy here in Thailand, like a high end BMW or Porsche. They're $100k over there, so over here probably $300k? And no supercharger network in Thailand so that's a problem.

Can't imagine the A/C would be a problem but who knows. Motors should generate less heat than an ICE and they're a lot smaller so that might be an advantage. I don't know if Tesla has passive cooling, like insulated roof and so on but would not surprise me. Some places in the USA are pretty hot too, Texas, AZ, NV, SoCal - I don't think this would be an issue.

I'd love to have one too. They make all other cars look old and stupid.

BTW I think that Thailand and its dear leaders are *not* focusing on solar / battery tech / electric cars is a huge failure.

They're currently investing big in all the wrong technologies, in pick-ups (tax breaks), in coal and nuclear plants (according to a recent news release).

This country could be a world leader in solar. But, no. Entrenched interests keep that from happening.

Just like all those other continuously sunny countries that have made themselves big noises in the solar industry, you mean? Like, err..., oh yes, no other countries apart from Spain.

The US and North Africa take the top ten sunniest country spots, Thailand doesn't get a look-in, yet the US and N Africa are hardly pioneers of solar energy (perhaps due to all those "entrenched interests" you mention) so why would you think Thailand should be?

Tesla are officially launching the Model S in Thailand at the Motor Expo next month.

I have built, raced and driven electric dragsters and a S10 pu since 1991.

The dual motor Tesla has recently run 10.81 in the quarter mile 402 meters.

I have also driven Teslas original roadster. But it's underpowered compared to the dual motor passenger car.

For most in thailand there's plenty of range. But infrastructure for away from home charges could be a problem here.

That is huge news!!!

They are also building a supercharger network of total 120 chargers around the country. That means you can drive for free everywhere in Thailand biggrin.png ... As long as you have spent 5 - 7 million on a Model S (or X) first tongue.png

I have driven the Model S, and its a great car!

I'm waiting for the Tesla Model 三 (Model 3), as I am not comfortable driving the large Model S.

They're using the Chinese character for "3"?
