EGAT: Quakes will have no influence on dams in Thailand

BANGKOK, 9 May 2015 (NNT) - The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has confirmed the earthquakes in Nepal on 25 April and Phang Nga province in Thailand on 6 May will not affect three major dams in the country.

EGAT director Decha Bunyakan on Saturday said the earthquake measuring device installed at the three major dams—Srinagarindra, Vajiralongkorn and Ratchaprapha—detected very low tremors that had reached the dams. The first two dams which were located on fault lines could withstand an earthquake of up to 7.0 magnitudes on the Richter scale, the director said.

The director added that an earthquake with its epicenter 60 kilometers away from the dams would have no influence on their stability.

The EGAT constantly conducted tests on the safety of major dams and after every earthquake, said the director. It also regularly conducted evacuation drills with provincial disaster prevention and mitigation departments in the areas surrounding the dams, Mr. Decha confirmed.
