I found out that when riding the bicycle I have problems to look behind if a car comes.

On a quick check I clearly don't have the full range of motion. On a better check, I can almost aline with my shoulders, just only slow and with lot power and it doesn't really hurt but it fells uncomfortable.

Would a good massage on that area help, or some exercises?

I think it is just stiff muscles.

that's the downer about all the poor fellas still riding conventional bicycles.

You've got all that approz 7kg of head dangling forward, held up by muscles, just to see where you are going.

Fortunately a long passed bicycle accident of mine, which gives me symptoms as per yours, meant I now ride a recumbent, and just use the mirrors, so it's no more a problem for moi.

Check to see if the 'restriction' occurs in just the one direction, but okay the other? if so, enquire for a set of neck strengthening exercises.

Neck soreness/stiffness can also be attributed to a shoulder, which itself cops 'referral' pains emanating from other nearby regions of the body.

I'd be looking out for some acupuncture...

... if you were to consider doing neck rotation exercises - be wary of any old chiropractors, instead, search out for somone who also performs 'manipulation', as they are more aware the damage caused by incorrect forms of neck rotation exercise

I ride a street racing bike and I do a lot shoulder exercises regularly. Over all I fit.

It is in both directions, but recently I had a problem and one side was much worse. I am not aware of any damage, but I did a lot crazy sports in the past so it is possible that there is one.

My father has it much worse, but he is 75 and once crashed the motherbike head first on a concrete pole....so that is understandable that he has problems.

All my life when I was serious it showed in the neck (was drafted to the army and had to sit 6 month in a small office with overweight degenerated women and their smelly dog treating me like a slave, there I had often headache from stiff neck muscles, but that time is long gone....only telling because it seems I am a bit sensitive there)

What position is your spine in when this occurs?

Try straightening your lower spine. When it is rounded (as often will be when riding a bike), neck movement is restricted. Test it out and you'll see what I mean.

So next time you need to look behind you, sit up straight first and see if that helps.

Yeah you are right clap2.gif

I tried it in the office, standing in a mock bicycle position gives me a bit less than standing complete straight....

Now I am a bit unsure....It still feels less than when I was young....but there is always that effect of seeing the past better than it was....

As well on the former bike I went x0.000 km and it almost feel like a part of my body, while I don't feel too comfortable on the new one yet.

I may rotated not only my head but also back and shoulders. I don't know how much you can rotate in the spine, not much but a bit. Hard to tell what is imagination, wrong remember and what is true.

I recall I could look back, now I can't maybe everywhere a few degree less with aging (19 years is not 45 years)?

Any ideas how to mobilize or how to check? Or can other people on the bicycle really look straight 180 degree back (spine+shoulders+head+eyes)???

have you tried mirrors?

there's also that other weird looking method of not turning or twisting at all, but instead looking upside down to the rear, taking in the view via under the armpit

Nobody not a contortionist can look 180 degrees back.

It is also normal as you age to have a bit less flexibility.

Is it true that the head is 7 kg? That much?

Over 10 % of my bodyweight is just the head?

...so okay, I just now Googled something - but that weight (fact? haha) has '"been in my head" for 30+years, ever since it was drilled into me during PhysEd classes in the military, while being coached on doing improving my SitUps:

and if the above Link is correct, then my head would currently be: 6.9384kg - so not bad for a figure plucked out of the air 30 years ago clap2.gif
