Depends on how the shop you are buying from does business. My first bike I layed down the money ,I even had the wrong home address on the bill of sale. !0 days after I bought the bike I had my green book.

Bought a Phantom 4 years ago had to jump through hoops to get my greenbook. The shop wouldnot give me my plate till i got proof of residence or yellow book.Locally the police refused to give me a residence certificate (kept giving me excuses ) I had to go 120 kilometers to immigration office and get my certificate. Even there the female officer was giving me a lot of grief till i made a call and 2 soldiers showed up and ask her if my certificate would take much longer.Got it in 1 minute.

For my last motorbike I just handed the passport to the shop (Honda Phuket, Thepkassatri Road), they went to the LTO, came back one hour later and everything was fine. For the last car I bought about 6 months ago, I had to do all the hoopla at immigration to get the confirmation. Lesson learned: Nothing is predictable.
