george Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Brewer claims people will drink more because of new law BANGKOK: -- The new law aimed at controlling alcohol consumption will make people drink more and destroy brewers and other alcohol-related businesses, people in alcohol-related industries said Sunday. Under the Alcohol Consumption Control bill, advertising, all forms of sales promotion activities, and the sale of alcohol to anyone under 25 would be banned. Brewers said the law would turn their future in the international market into nothing more than a pipe dream, while advertisers said the law would affect sponsorship of social activities. Boonrawd Trading Co's marketing manager Chatchai Wiratyosin said the total ban on advertising could lead to heavy price-cutting campaigns by new and existing alcohol players which would stimulate greater consumption. Chaipranin Visudhipol, president of the Advertising Association of Thailand and TBWA (Thailand) managing director, said if the objective of the law was to make the nation drink less, a total ban on advertising would not help. "It can be seen that lao khao [white liquor] has top sales without any advertising," he said. "It is also the main kind of alcohol drank by drivers who had road accidents." Besides affecting the Bt1 billion advertising budget of alcohol companies each year, the new bill will have a great effect on many useful activities sponsored by alcohol companies, such as sports, he said. Chaipranin said the current measures to restrict alcohol ads were sufficient. Only social advertising is allowed for all kinds of alcoholic drink now and the ads have to be aired after 10pm, he said. --The Nation 2006-09-10
farangsay Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 "People drink more" - "destroy brewers" Who makes this stuff up ? PS I knew the cops could bag you and estimate how much you'd been drinking. I didn't realise they could detect what you'd been drinking without an autopsy.
mittheimp Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 First time ive seen this, is this true? Banning alcohol to under 25's will really make Thailand a hit on the backpacking circuit!
kurgen Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 bars to close at 1am, no shops to sell booze between 11am and 5pm and now you've got to be 25 to drink have the Taliban been voted in yet ?
Couthy Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 It is hilarious, really it is, Just how exactly are you going to stop Thais drinking when they want to drink?. I mean I live in the middle of BKK and sure the 7-11 will not serve booze at certain times. Every other place does though. Having worked with a bunch of Thais for 14 years they ignore this concept completely after all Thailand is supposed to be the 'Land of the Free'. Errr....isn't it?. I suspect a certain Chinese descended Thai police colonel, burger king flipper, PHD, computer salesman, acting in absentia caretaker PM, non drinking , clean livin' chap may be behind this. How to provoke a revolution in LOS - ban booze. "Let them eat cake" said Mary Antoinette and look what happened to her...... Cheers, Couthy. bars to close at 1am, no shops to sell booze between 11am and 5pm and now you've got to be 25 to drink have the Taliban been voted in yet ?
Frajuhe Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Fine it is a really good idea! If they want to criminalize every barkeeper or storeholder, who does not ask a guest or customer for an age verification. But I think that does not solve the problem of alcoholism. It will only increase the consum of alcohol and create a new source of earnings for illegal alcohol trading. Institutor of this law ... go back to start and try to think again .
lingyai Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Why question is what segment of society is pushing this. I know there are Buddhist groups who are pushing anti drinking laws and they seem to have the edge over the alcohol companies and nightlife/tourist spot owners, at least lately. Who else? What voters are being target with these moves? Older generations and conservative Buddhists?
Choscura Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I drink thai 'moonshine' about 90% of the time I drink anyway. let them try to ban hot plates, buckets and rubber tubing.
Scott Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 Who is this aimed at? In most villages, the locals go get their local brew and drink whereever they want. A friend who owns a shop in a village doesn't even know there is a restriction on when they can sell alcohol!
