Second batch of officials accused of corruption ready for submission in a few days

BANGKOK: -- The Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) says it expects to submit the second list of government officials accused of corruption to the Justice Minster for consideration within the next few days.

Secretary-general to the PACC, Mr Prayong Priyajit, said the list of the second batch of officials accused of corruption have earlier been carefully scrutinised by four agencies, namely National Anti-Corruption Commission, PACC, Department of Special Investigation, and Office of the Auditor-General.

The list of names will be concluded within the next few days and forwarded to Justice Minister Gen Phaibul Kumchaya for consideration.

He declined to say either how many officials are in the second list or it includes senior officials, saying it depends on evidence that are linked to.

He also denied political intervention in the submission of the first list to the prime minister for action.

The offences of people in the first list were obvious, he said, adding that any person found to be unjustly accused could petition to the Justice Minister.

Yes, Yes drum roll and sound fanfare. Wasn't the plan supposed to be that the PM would personally check the lists and decide on sufficiency of evidence ?This naturally leads to suspicion that some are virtually guaranteed to be listed while others will have nothing to worry about.

Some on the first list have been ' axed ' but the proof of the pudding will be when they start appearing in court.

"He declined to say either how many officials are in the second list or it includes senior officials, saying it depends on evidence that are linked to."

Yet the list will be submitted in the next few days and it has been carefully scrutinized.

Why does a great cloud of confusion hang over most official pronouncements? I have two theories:

1) It is the inevitable result of the battle between truth and face.

2) It is the inevitable result of official incompetence joined with the incompetence of the press.

Was working in Malaysia in the late 80s. Staff there told me that police captains would not buy any car more expensive than a Corolla or Lancer, lest they be call up for questioning on how they can afford to live beyond their means.

It is thus easy to identify corrupt officials here as they love to show off wealth.

And don't the Thai's just revel in it - it's the my d-ck is bigger than your d-ck taken to the extreme which up till now was ok because no one gave xxxx as to where the money came from - however it now seems this might be changing and not before time.

I would move and suggest the creation of a new ministry in the a Thai government system,

the ministry of corruption dealing and inactive posts... surly by now, the will have their hands

full, and these problems aren't going away, where Thai official and money meets, there be

always a chance for dishonesty and corruptions in the offing... this IS what grease the wheels

of business in Thailand....

They worship only money here. You can be as corrupt as your bank account allows.

Slow progress is better than no progress.

But it takes generations to change socially-accepted norms, for children in school to see that bad equals bad and if you are bad you get thrown to the wolves. The first generation may only absorb a little bit of this, as their background environment remains the same as before. But those 'little bits' add up over the generations, until corruption is viewed as the exception and not the rule.

Both sides have been playing this game for a very long time. Inactive posts for our friends, and prosecutions for our enemies, with a few of our friends being prosecuted and then given community service to justify it all.

It is horse dung, and the newest round of reds heading for cells.

TVF members who choose a side are kidding themselves with their loyalties to justice and democracy.

It is all the same smoke and mirrors that created 18 coups--18! A BP writer, a conservative, observed "All the coups justified themselves two ways. First, they said they stepped in to stop corruption, and then, second, they absolved themselves of any responsibility for staging a coup.

It is still the same. Almost as whacked out and nuts as western Democracy, with a slice of lime and a twist of Thainess.

This is so intriguing,I would love to be a fly on the wall when these lists are compiled.

Why one list followed by another list, how many lists will there be? 10, 100, 1000?

How do the corrupt but connected avoid the list, what sort of losers end up on the list when all around are doing the same things?

Any Military on the list?

And of course what punishment is meted out to the ones on the list.

The Land Department has been deemed the most corrupt government agency going. If you have ever had a transaction with them you will know why. Yet,there is never a written word about it,never any public statements from the government and never anyone arrested or prosecuted. My wife is an attorney here in Bangkok, prepares her settlement statements and documents meticulously for her clients. Everything is up to snuff but, the folks at the The Land Office still want there dues to assure a smooth transition of property. Without paying under the table they can make your life in The Land Office a living hell for days or weeks at a time. Until the client finally gives in and pays the additional 10,000 and up for officials and their pockets so that the buyer and seller can move on with their lives. Forget about building a railway to China, first deal with things at home.
