I was wondering if there are any ladyboys who come from wealthy/hi-so families. If there are any ladyboys from these families, does their family lose face? Is being a ladyboy frowned upon in the hi-so circle? Any instances of a ladyboy whose mom/dad is a high ranking government official/ politician?

What if a generals son decides to become a ladyboy, what will happen to him?

I'd definitely appreciate thai members of this forum joining the discussion.

Most hi-so families are ethnic Chinese and they are less tolerant of ladyboys. Hi-so culture is more likely to exclude others than to include them. There may be some that are related by blood, but I doubt that they have much acceptance in the social circles.

I know one. She was frowned upon until she married a big wheel from Washington DC and he gave her a rock the size of a golf ball and homes and so on...... Now momma is very proud and shows everyone her photo with VIP's in Washington.

Hi there,

I think every parent (no matter they are rich or not) do not want the boy to become lady boy. I heard that for most scenarios, it will take a while for family to accept this. At first, father (mostly father) may ignore him (lady boy) once he (father) knows but later on he will know that this what his son really wants to be and he can accept it. I say that this is mostly for father because mother seems to be flexible with this. I think that it is now more open on this but there is also still some families that do not accept this and exclude his son. Anyway, I think it is less than the families who can accept this.

Sorry if my grammar or wordings are not quite clear. I am Thai and this is not general topic I am writing (in English). :-)

Actually yesterday I saw a Muslim Lady Boy, all dressed up with the full outfit on ???

Kudos to them, must be difficult for sure....

I'm not being sarcastic when I ask how did you know it was a ladyboy?

In my experience when females of the Muslim faith are fully dressed as per their religious code there is not much to see, how could you possibly tell what their gender was?

Apologies if there is an obvious answer...

ม้า อรนภา is a Thai Ladyboy Super Star. We have all seen her in Thai Soaps and on many talk back programs (she is in her 60's now and has a very short bobbed hair cut).

From all reports, her lifestyle is super hi-so and about 99.9% of us on TV would not even come close (or even dream) to be living the life she has. Some of the Miss Tiffany girls have also done extremely well. Not all ladyboys are working Soi 4 and most of my partners friends have successful businesses as well. Last night we went to a Wedding and the two other ladyboys that went with us owned large guesthouses.

As other posters said here, the Father in most cases does not take to the fact the son is or has become a ladyboy very well. My partners father died 20 years ago and every time she acted 'girly', her father would beat her stupid. The mother just accepted everything very well. The father has several large plantations of nut trees and from what I gather, having only one son and three daughters, he wanted the son to look after the property when he got older. 20 years later, my partner is quite successful and she has been looking after these plantations of nut trees since she was 15 as the overseer hiring staff, etc,etc...

It was very obvious by the Face and the size of the hands and feet, she was no means skinny, a bit like a Naffi truck driver, delivering Birdsy eye fish fingers....

But like I said, Kudos , if that's what you want to do, it's there life...

I don't know, but my thinking is that most go the ladyboy route for the money they make providing "services" for farangs. So, I don't think they'll be many of them because they don't have to do it if they've money.

About one in 100 or 1% do it for the money (if you mean prostitute). I draw these numbers from lady boys I've known at institutions of higher learning. When one gets out of the brothel areas of Thailand and is exposed to all elements of Thai society one gets a better picture of reality. Thailand banned lady boys in teacher education in 1997 and then lifted the ban in 1998.

Everywhere in Thailand except on Thai Visa, lady boys are accepted into the LGBT community. However as evidenced by this thread being in the pub fun forum Thai Visa has taken the T out of LGBT so one gets the slings and arrows of the normal pub community as evidenced by your opinion.

I'm curious as to who the husband is. I'll be keeping an eye out now for mention of a DC big shot with a Thai wife.

Yes. Her name is Maa (http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%A0%E0%B8%B2_%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A4%E0%B8%A9%E0%B8%8E%E0%B8%B5). Last time I saw her, about half a year ago, she invited my mom and I to her 45 Million baht penthouse (Which really wasn't that impressive, just lot's of empty space and multiple bed/bathrooms) and had her chef prepare me an ostrich steak. Personally, I didn't know her when she was young, but my mom did, and she admitted that "fame and fortune" had gotten into her head and changed her a lot. But in the end, it's her life.

That's the Thai TV series (ladyboy). She's a regular judge on one of the countless "Thailand's Got Talent" or "Thailand Can Sing" type shows, and seems to regularly pop up on many other variety/talk shows as well, I presume because she's under contract to one of the main Thai TV channels.

I see her out and around BKK from time to time, without all the makeup on that goes with TV appearances. Very famous, but still not really what Thais think of when they use the term "hi-so".

AFAIK, hi-so in Thai parlance doesn't just mean wealthy. In other words, there are lots of very wealthy Thais who aren't considered hi-so, at least not in the traditional sense. Hi-so certainly includes wealth, but also includes broader things like family line/background, etc.
