Dao Din group calls for end of military rule and restoration of democracy

22-5-2558-16-12-521-wpcf_728x408.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Khon Kaen University’s Dao Din political activist group has vowed to carry on with their peaceful call for the end of the military regime and the restoration of democratic rule.

The group’s resolve to carry on with the peaceful fight for democracy was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the group whose key members were released over the weekend after their arrest by military personnel on May 22 when they protested against the junta on the occasion of the first anniversary of the May 22 coup a year ago.

In the statement, the group defended their protest last week saying it was meant to remind the military regime and the public in general of the right of self determination by the public to mange natural resources and the environment.

But under the military rule and by virtue of Section 44, the group claimed that free expressions were suppressed and members of the public were denied the right of access of information with their eyes blindfolded and mouths gagged.

The group called for the scrapping of Section 44 and the interim charter and to return democracy to the people.

NRC deliberates land management reform

BANGKOK, 25 May 2015 (NNT) - The National Reform Council (NRC) has deliberated on four principles in the reform of land management and has proposed the revision of the community forest act to better benefit local communities.

The NRC committee on the reform of natural resources and environmental policies said any reform effort on land management must coincide with the principles of creating equal access to natural resources, supporting reforestation, encouraging local participation and reducing conflict between communities and the state authorities.

The committee proposed the land bank act in order to provide funding for land development and land appropriation for local farmers and the impoverished.

Meanwhile, the proposed community title deed act and the community forest act would encourage public participation in public land management which would facilitate efficiency in forest conservation at the local level.

NRC members commented on a provision in the community forest act which takes community forests out of the jurisdiction of national parks for the sake of public management, could lead to violations and encroachments. They therefore proposed the setting up of a committee consisting of various experts to carefully study the implications of the community forest act.
