Filipino nurses 'in demand in UK, Ireland'

MANILA: -- The Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE) of the Philippines said on Monday that United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland have opened their doors to more overseas Filipino workers (OFW) this year after they announced around 700 openings for Filipino nurses, Manila Bulletin reported.

Citing a report from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in London, Labour and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the vacancies comes from 12 jobs orders coming from employers in both European countries from January to March.

Baldoz attributed the positive trend to the exceptional skills, values, and work ethics of Filipino nurses, who are able to work in both UK and Ireland.

Baldoz urged qualified local nurses to avail of these highly-paid positions.

“A registered nurse in the UK receives an annual salary ranging from £21,478 to £27,901; while a nurse in Ireland receives a salary ranging from €29,205 to €35,000 a year,” Baldoz said.

According to the UK Department of Employment, 20,226 work permits were issued to Filipinos between 1968 and 1980. Some 47% of the work permits were issued for those who came to work in hospitals.....
The NHS started to recruit more Filipino nurses in the 1990s to make up a shortfall in local recruitment.
There are approximately 200,000 Filipinos in the UK based on the 2013 estimate of the Philippine Embassy in London.
Most of the Filipinos in the UK are working in the health sector such as nurses, carers, radiographers, and others.

" Baldoz attributed the positive trend to the exceptional skills, values, and work ethics of Filipino nurses, who are able to work in both UK and Ireland." Only after a 20 day assessment course and registering with the nurses and midwifery council.. I'm sure it used to be a one year course!

You pay Filipino wages, you get Filipinos.

No wonder no-one in England wants to enter this thankless career.

Since 2001, the Philippine Medical Association noted that about 5,000 doctors have shelved their hard-earned MDs (Doctor of Medicine) to become RNs (Registered Nurses) in countries like the United States, United Kingdom or Saudi Arabia.
And it’s not hard to imagine why Filipino medical doctors want to become nurses in the United States, the country where most health care professionals migrate. While a doctor, say from the Philippine General Hospital earns P25,000 a month, an overseas nurse can earn more than 12 times overseas.

It isn't so much the wages but the toll shift work and the nature of the work takes on the nurses. It's very hard to stay motivated at 3 AM on a Saturday or when you watch a kid die, or are abused by Mrs. Grumpy. The deeply religious nature of Pinoys allows them to isolate themselves from the pain they endure. One sees this with other religious groups too like Haitians.

Unfortunately many "qualifications", which are respected inside the borders of the Philippines , are widely derided outside the borders of the Philippines.

An MD awarded in the Philippines is not easily convalidated in a country with a more regulated education system.

The option of becoming a specialised nurse get around the problem, AND offers a higher salary than at home.
