In the middle of February of 2007 my visa expires.

In the middle of May of 2007 I turn 50 and can get a retirement visa.

Great timing, I could not have pulled it off any better if I tried!

My questions are, if anybody has this knowledge yet.

If your visa expires and you go to the boarder will you still get the 30 stamp for re-entry?

Can I get two renewable 60 day tourist visas to make it to the date where I am able to apply for my retirement visa?

It is not clear what visa you now have. If you have a multi non immigrant that expires in Feb 2007 an entry just prior would give you another 90 day stay which would seem to allow you to change to a retirement extension of stay without an extra visa/trip.

If not you would want to exit country to obtain a non immigrant O single entry or if they will not issue that a real 60 day tourist visa. Either of these can be used at immigration to extend your stay for retirement on a yearly basis (but the tourist visa will have to be converted at an additional cost of 2,000 baht and requires application with at least 21 days remaining on your entry).

With the new rules it is not clear if a 30 day entry would be allowed if you have already spent 90 days or more here so I would not count on it. I am sure we will know more long before February.

Sorry, I should have supplied better information, if I want intelligent responses. Let’s see if this helps.

I have a Visa B.

This expires on November 20, 2006. If I go for one more Visa run I should be Ok until the middle of February 2007.

I turn 50 the middle of May 2007. At which point I can get my retirement visa.

So I have about 3 months or so I will need to stay in the country until I am eligible to apply for my retirement Visa.

What I am trying to do is avoid the expense and the time required of going back to the US and gets a new Visa B for the 90 days it now seems I will be left in limbo.

My questions are.

What are the best and safest ways to accomplish this?

Can I get a tourist Visa for 60 days and then get an extension to get me the 90 days I need?

Or can I still do the Visa run 3 times and get the 90 days? (Thanks for your answer ‘looburi3’ that this information is not yet available)

Is there another option that I am not aware of?

Thanks for your help, Bill.

Yes, as I understand it you can go to Penang or KL for example and get a 60 day tourist visa which you will then be able to extend to 90 days at the Office of Immigration Bureau in BKK.

As long as you go to a Thai Embassy or Consulate somewhere they will issue you with one of these.

This is a better idea than just crossing the border to Cambodia every 30 days, firstly because that would be a pain (!) and secondly due to these new rules which I agree, aren't crystal clear yet.

The tourist visa/extension may not allow time (there seems to be a requirement of 21 days remaining on permitted to stay stamp to allow a visa change to non immigrant) so it may require a second trip out to obtain another visa if you do not obtain a two entry tourist visa in the first place.
