Can I get a 2nd 30-day visa exempt stamp at the land border crossing?

Featured Replies

I have spent the last couple hours searching forums for the most up-to-date answer and just couldn't piece a clear answer to my question.

I have a US Passport. I entered Thailand by air and received a visa exempt 30-day stamp. I extended my stay by 30 days at the Chiang Mai immigration office. I am nearing the end of the 30-day extension period and would like to stay about 20 more days from Chiang Mai.

Is it possible to go to the Laos LAND border and cross back and forth in one day and get another 30-day visa exempt stamp that way?

I would fly from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani and then get to the land border to Laos and crossover and cross back if I can get a 30-day stamp.

(I definitely need more than 15 days because my planned flight out of Thailand would be in about 20 days.)

OR.....

If I fly out of the country on Saturday (i.e. Vientaine, Siem Reap, etc) and fly back on Sunday, will it be any problem to get a new 30-day visa exempt stamp at the airport immigration?

(I am guessing this should be ok, but would like to make sure.)

I would like to take care of this over the upcoming weekend if possible, but am not sure what is possible.

Next time I come to Thailand and plan to stay an extended period of time I will definitely apply for a visa at a consulate before arriving. I would prefer to take care of my current situation over this weekend and not have to take up days to go to the Thai consulate next week as I have friends I would like to travel with next week in Thailand.

I am sure this is a straightforward question that has probably been answered elsewhere, though I have not found an answer that was very clear about my question - many of the other comments were about multiple entry visa holders, or applying for visas after crossing the border.

Thanks for the help!

You will get a 30 day entry at any crossing.

You could do the crossing at the Mae Sai crossing in Chiang Rai. A border pass to Myanmar only costs 500 baht or $10. Or you could go the Chiang Kong crossing to Laos which will cost $35 or 1500 baht for the visa on arrival.

No need to go all the way to Nong Khai to do the crossing.

Thanks, in advance, for any info.

Thank you for the reply, it is much appreciated.

Does anyone know if it is worth it to do the border run with a visa agent or just try to go it alone...

A "visa" agent will do nothing other than perhaps provide transport,

A choice for you !smile.png

I thought things were clear, but once again I am confused!

The reply by the Star member / Global Moderator seemed clear that I could get a 30-day Visa Exempt stamp at the Mae Sai Border doing an in/out visa exempt stamp run.

But, in a thread on 2015/5/23 that it seems the same Global Moderator was also commenting on it seems that people have been denied to leave Thailand without a visa saying the in/out visa exempt stamp run is not allowed.

There is no requirement to have a flight out of the country to do a border crossing for a 30 day visa exempt entry. The problem you may have is that Mae Sot will not let you leave the country to get a visa exempt entry according to a recent report. If you are close to the crossing you could try.

Their are other crossing where you could go to besides Vientiane. The nearest might be Ban Phu Nam Ron in Kanchanaburi.

Do you have 800k baht in the bank now? You could go to the embassy in Vientiane and get a single entry non-o visa there. Then apply for the your extension.

There seems to be mixed information coming from the same source...

Now I am stuck once again trying to figure out what to do... I understand that the situation may be in flux, but then it would help for that to be the answer, instead of "Yes, you can get a 30-day visa exempt stamp at any crossing..." when that doesn't seem to be the case.

Or am I missing something?!?!

Someone please clarify...

Thanks!

Help?!?! Bump!

Topic you posted a link to and quoted is for the Mae Sot border crossing in Tak province. I mentioned the Mae Sai crossing in Chaing Rai. province.

Be patient !

I am running out of days on my stay and am trying to take care of this tomorrow (Saturday) and just worried on a Friday afternoon everyone is out having fun (as they should be) and I'd still be unsure.

Just for other peoples' information, I have been told by an agent that it should be possible, but that I definitely need a printout of an outbound ticket from Thailand.

Thanks again...

The "agent" must be correct !

However............

Many find "agents" to be an unreliable source of information

Leaving "stuff" until the last minute is always a bad idea !
