Thailand discusses human trafficking in fishery industry with Myanmar and Indonesia



BANGKOK: -- Three ASEAN countries yesterday held talk to resolve human trafficking in the fishery industry, but avoid the Rohingya migrant issue.

The talk in Pattaya that focussed on law enforcement was hosted by Thailand and attended by Indonesia and Myanmar.

The meeting agreed most of the people fallen prey to the human trafficking in the fishery sector were from Myanmar, though no point was made on the Rohingyas.

Thai Department of Special Investigation (DSI) director-general Suwana Suwannajuta acting as the representative of Thailand pointed out that she would later report the information reached at the meeting to the government for further consideration of solutions that would best fit the current situation.

The meeting has suggested that a database of victims in human trafficking should also be set up between Thailand and Indonesia, as Thailand has already created one between Myanmar, she said.

She said the three countries still have different legal standards and implementation processes, which obstructed better legal cooperation.

She further noted that the meeting did not discuss any points on the irregular migrations of Ronhingyas.

Myanmar’s DSI director-general, Brig.Gen. Win Neng Tun said that since April, Myanmar has been working with the Interpol off the Indonesian waters to rescue victims of human trafficking and found that most victims were from Myanmar, followed closely by those from Cambodia and Laos.

However, he said these people have not yet been repatriated as there is a problem with the nationality identification processes, as most had gone through several human trafficking chains before their rescues.

He affirmed that the problem could only be solved via the cooperation from all three countries.

One thing Thailand is good at is talking , this human trafficking has been going on for decades and what are they doing , Talking, of course the other two despot countries aligned with ASEAN Indonesia and Burma are also good at talking , as they say half the effort is trying , you are very trying indeed.

Perhaps if Thailand sent their fishing boats directly to Myanmar to pick-up the migrants & employ them as fishermen, it would solve many issues.
Myanmar would shift quite a few un-recognised people from squatting on their soil,

Thailand would have guaranteed fully crewed fishing boats (as before)

crew could even have false paperwork/contracts to make them legal.

When crew members are finished with they would be dropped off in Indonesia... somewhere !!

Problem.. what problem !

Not sure if women and children could qualify as 'fishermen' though. Most of the unrecognized "squatters" are Rohingya who have been in Burma for generations on their own soil, who seem to be victims of systematic ethnic cleansing by the Burmese government.
