A network of rice farmers believes Govt. can help raise rice price by 1,000 baht per ton

BANGKOK, 7 June 2015 (NNT) - President of a rice farmers’ network Weera Rungrueng believes that the government can help increase the price of rice by a thousand baht per ton.

He told the media that rice prices have fallen hard, due to the officials’ discouragement from off-season farming, droughts, and the Commerce Ministry’s plan to release one million tons of rice in its third auction scheduled for the middle of this month.

Mr. Weera was however convinced that the administration would be able to increase the price of rice by a thousand baht per ton, referring to Deputy Prime Minister for economic affairs M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula’s statement given to the media earlier. In order to achieve that feat, Mr. Weera said cooperation from all sides was needed.

The network president is also concerned about the 17 million tons of stockpiled rice, which are low-quality grains and not suitable for exporting or selling through government-to-government deals. He said exporting them would negatively affect the confidence of foreign buyers in Thai rice.

The rice farmers’ network representative was of the opinion that the current rice price crisis would not affect the Kingdom’s top rice exporter title, as the nation only exports new and high-quality rice.

Of course the price of rice is dropping the current government has to sell the rice the PTP bought. Everyone with a grain of intelligence could see this coming. They were shafted in so many ways by the rice program (Yingluck not making sure there was money to pay the farmers when she stepped down was one of them).

This must have been one of the biggest failures of Thai government ever and now the farmers pay the price plus the Thai taxpayer.

Among all of this its now also clear that high members of the PTP pretended to deliver to sell to the chinese (at reduced prices) and then sold this rice back in the system making great profits.

YL said she inspected the storage.. and it was all good however when the army inspected it was rotten and lots missing.

What a total disaster and criminal thing to do too bad the farmers will blame the junta as they are in general not educated enough to see through the lies.

Oryza says that Thailand plans to sell the bulk of its stored rice for animal feed and ethanol production due to low quality. Link

That can't be true.. the PTP has assured us that the rice was of good quality and there was nothing wrong with this program.

and no its was not a subsidy.. because subsidies are taken into account in the national budget. This was self financing.cheesy.gif

The Thai govt. could always try manipulating the world rice market.................oh, hang on a minute..........

Yes I remember that.

“If we manipulate the mechanism for two years, three years, then things will be moving naturally,” Thaksin, who was ousted in a 2006 coup and has lived overseas since fleeing a 2008 jail sentence, said in Singapore today. “The rice price in the world market is increasing.”

NO

The Prayut regime paid the double market price for the pledged rice from borrowing the funds through sales of treasury bonds. That has no effect on world market prices as there is sufficient world competition to prevent Thailand from controlling the world market prices.

In fact the Prayut government has yet to sell any of the pledged rice and when it does, the price will be appropriate for the quality and grade of the rice according to global price demands, ei., less than market price for high quality rice.

As an aside, Prayut was under no legal obligation to pay double for the pledged rice. In fact the 2007 Constitution and the Election Commission prevented Yingluck from borrowing funds to pay for the pledged rice. But Prayut wanted political support of the farmers by paying double market prices - ironically the same reason Yingluck was willing to pay double.

Why do you deliberately confuse issues? The current government was obliged to meet commitments of the previous government. Which has very little to do with the fact that a caretaker government has no right to borrow.

Nobody suggested that Thailand is controlling world market price. That bit of idiocy was Thaksin's baby and PTP policy. But selling stockpiles of rice accumulated during the scam will push down market prices. That much of the rice stockpiled is of inferior grade, is another loss to the Thai people who paid far more than it was worth even when fresh, and have been paying storage costs ever since.

I find it ironic that Yingluk's secret meeting with property developers, likely IMHO to encourage them to build rice storage was held at the 4 Seasons. That's about how long her scam lasted.

ahhh ha ha ha ha ha hahaahahahaaaaa or perhaps just perpetuate the corruption of the last rice scheme. So some middle men are missing the extra cash from previous admin. I have a better plan, lets just ruin what little remains of the Thai rice reputation. haaa ha ha ha ha.

k.Weera seems to confuse the price of rice with his income. The restriction on second season growing and the drought would have reduced the supply of rice, increasing the market price, IF the government hadn't been selling down the stockpile. However, it is more than a little hypocritical to complain about that, as the rice being sold was bought from his members at considerably more than market price, now and then. Best forgotten, that.

Every word you have written is lies.

The Prayut Govt never bought any rice from the farmers all the rice that had been bought by the Yingluck Govt and was in storage when the military took over. On 24 April 2014 the Yingluck Govt claimed there was 19.8 million tons in storage : http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/721043-pm-yingluck-urges-nacc-to-inspect-rice-stock-to-determine-whether-rice-was-really-missing/ in fact on inspection there was around a million and a half tons less.

There have been 2 auctions of rice from storage http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/749228-first-rice-auction-since-ncpo-took-power-open-to-all-traders/ and http://news.thaivisa.com/thailand/second-rice-auction-this-year-fetches-another-8-billion-baht/36185/ and the third is due http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/831265-potential-rice-bidders-to-inspect-quality-of-thai-govt-stock-this-week/.

If you read the report on the first auction you will see that there has also been other sales from the stockpile bringing the total sold to date to over 2 million tons.

Prayut never paid for any rice, the military when they took over honored the debt that the Yingluck Govt had incurred by buying rice under the scheme then failing to make provision for paying the farmers before she dissolved the house. There was nothing to stop the PT Govt borrowing to pay the farmers before the house was dissolved and this should have been done as they knew the debt had been incurred and must be paid.

They lied repeatedly to the farmers that they would be paid and said the money was available but it was not, more lies.

The caretaker Govt could not borrow by law as they were not allowed to rack up debts that any future Govt would be responsible for, however that only came after the failure (criminal negligence) of making provision for payment first before dissolving the house.

I repeat once more "The Prayut Govt never bought any rice they paid the debt of the PT Govt".

Robby,

Those red-shirts love lying their ass off, good that you corrected them. They are still defending the rice scam and will always do so. But he is one of the worst, the others at least know they can't defend this.
