Hello all.

I am British 42 year old travelling to Thailand with young daughter who will spend 5 weeks with her mother (non Thai).

Just had a thought that I will need visa.

Travel dates 15th July to 22nd Aug.

Any advice please greatly appreciated.

thanks

Getting tourist visas would give you both a 60 day entry. You can apply for the visas by post or in person at the embassy. Info here: http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/4

If you don't get a visa you would 30 day visa exempt entries and the could extend them for 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht. Without a visa you may be asked for a ticket out of the country within 30 days in order to board your flights.

An overstay of 7 day would be a fine of 3500 baht. A 30 day extension of the 30 day visa exempt entry only costs 1900 baht.

Overstay is 500 Baht a day.

Your daughter would not be fined if under 15.

As said before, without a Visa you might not be allowed on the flight.

Thankyou. So best option is then obtain tourist visa extension for me ( single extension ) at £25 as i dont intend on leaving thailand until the departure on 22nd July.

And not to worry about getting visa for daughter (4 years old) or do they frown upon this?

Given the dates and the cost of visa application what would be the consequences if we simply overstay by those additional 7 days ?

I have always been asked if I have a visa

When flying from UK and staying more than 30 days.

It could turn out a very expensive mistake for you.

The fee for an extension is more than 25 pounds so I assume you mean the fee for a tourist visa at the embassy or one of the consulates.

Not sure it the airline will make a problem for your daughter boarding the flight without a visa or a ticket out within 30 days.

The overstay will for her will not be a problem but she will get an overstay stamp and you will be delayed at departure immigration while they do the stamp.

Thanks for all the info.

Researching the costs assciated with obtaining 60 day visa in the uk....is it ok for me to travel without the 60 day visa from london and then go to the immigration center once in thailand and pay the 1900bht for the 60 day extension...? Will this be acceptable?

If they allow you to board the flight in the UK at the outset...It's an 'IF' that could cost you dearly.

It has been reported when heading to Thailand, that a visa for anything over the 30 days and proof of a return ticket is commonly asked for at immigration/check in points.

If you enter and get a 30 day visa exempt entry you can only get a 30 day extension at an immigration office.

As said before is that you may have is that you may not be allowed to board your flight without a ticket out of the country within 30 days of arrival.

I have a return ticket...15th July to 22nd Aug...im just trying to save a few pennies!

So what you are saying is that the staff at Heathrow could possibly stop me from boarding ?

Just want to be very clear.

Yes, they can stop you from boarding if you don't have the relevant visa for the duration of your stay.

It doesn't mean you will be stopped from boarding, but they certainly have the authority to stop you. A few quid up front can save a lot of heartache...not to mention saving you the inconvenience visiting the immigration office in country.
