Cambodian Troops Occupy Thai Farmer's Land in Sa Kaeo

Thai border patrol police and Cambodian soldiers negotiate over farmland in Sa Kaeo province, 11 June 2015.

SA KAEO — A small-scale territory dispute broke out along the Thai-Cambodian border today over a plot of land that currently belongs to a Thai farmer.

The 61-year-old rice farmer, Subin Thiangsan, said Cambodian soldiers arrived on her fields in Sa Kaeo province today and claimed the land is Cambodian territory.

A group of Thai officials and Border Patrol Police later arrived and negotiated with the Cambodian troops. Both sides were unarmed.

Pol.Col. Rerk Panitcharoen, a local commander of the Thai Border Patrol Police, said he instructed Subin to stop working on her plot of land for one week while the two sides negotiate a solution.

Suhari Channok, a local administrator, told reporters that Cambodian authorities have been installing new border markings in recent months, and have been encroaching deeper into Khok Soong district, which borders Cambodia.

He said a barbed wire fence had been placed near the border by Thai authorities many years ago, but does mark the exact border, and was only constructed to prevent illegal border crossings.

"So, as days go by, the Cambodians have claimed that the area beyond the barbed wire is their own territory," Suhari said, adding that some Cambodians had entered Subin's farmland and tried to plant rice in her fields.

If Cambodia wanted to mark their border, they should have done it correctly the first time.

It will be interesting to see how this progresses, assuming there is a followup article.

It wasn't Cambodia who erected the barbed wire boundary fence.

They may well feel they are correcting another's error.

Doesn't mean they are right of course.

Couldn't Subin potentially still own the property even if it's found to be in Cambodia?

With a deed issued by Thailand for part of Cambodia?

If you can get deeds for national parks, why not for Cambodia??

Kids need their occasional quarrels.

Just be thankful Abhisit is not in power using the Thai Army as a breast beating Nationalistic club like he did in 2011...........Oh wait a minute, who's in charge now?. Cue a couple of "no, they're not really" cluster bombs ( they're called Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munitions, DPICM, by the Thai Army, sounds better than cluster bombs and that way they can pretend they're not covered by the world wide ban on cluster munitions that Thailand signed in 2008) being lobbed across the fence in retaliation...............

What points a military junta that can't even guarantee national sovereignty over borders?

They're tied up purging the winners of the last four democratic elections at the moment.

Once done with that, they'll give the Cambodians a little slap, before possibly losing in an international court and stamping their feet about how great they as Thais are.

Learn some history.....Read the history of Cambodia and you'll find out why they could not.

Of course, had a Thaksin puppet been in power, he could have had a word with his eternal friend.

Probably turned out the Shin family somehow had ownership of the land wink.png

"They're tied up purging the winners of the last four democratic elections at the moment,"

Actually they appear to be rounding up the usual suspects. Cleaning house, purging the system.

yes start a war for some small piece of land....

Thai land.

Thai land is made out of gold, don't you know, there is nothing more precious than it, they are so lucky to have it, because they are golden, perfect people themselves, no one else is worthy of it. Certainly not some (dirt) Khmer.

The distasteful 'dirt Khmer' comes from what many Thais call them. :(

Thai Border Police.....in theory, they should have arrested the Cambodians for illegal entry into Thailand and THEN waited for orders from above.

The fact that the Cambodian soldiers were not armed indicates that this is a deliberate attempt to gently push the boundaries. Push back, I say, and let them sort it out at ministerial level.

Not unusual anywhere in the world. There are still many border disputes in the EU, between the USA and Canada, even between individual states in the USA: Maine and New Hampshire have been disputing a river boundary for 100 years, Kentucky claims a whole Ohio town.

What really messed up Cambodia and Thailand was the French set the boundaries, then the UN got involved. That guarantees confusication.

It is interesting to see, what appears to be a very minor territorial dispute, evolve into a platform for posters to vent political venom, speculation and hateful posts.

I believe most people just read and move on, without the fuel from consumed beverages to aid them.

Why didn't Thailand mark their border correctly when they installed an electrical anti poaching fence? Border disputes work both ways.

Thailand is famous for land grabbing along its borders!

Cambodia sucks - always has, always will... One or the most depressing and god forsaken countries I have ever been. Apparently, depression leads to aggression. Leave the poor farmer alone, will ya?

A bit of a generalisation and a sweeping statement isn't it?

sure.............. Cambodia has its issues and problems and is still under the influence of a Vietnamese installed dictator lining his own and his band of merry mens pockets, as all despots do: but with its recent history the people could do with a bit of a helping hand.

Many of those in business I have come across, the Police force, Army and government positions can be as greedy and arrogant as most other Asian countries ( I think they all go on the same courses ) that doesn't apply to the people on the ground that you come across day to day.

The place is not perfect and has a long way to go, but I disagree that it " sucks ". It's depressing?? In what way? They are a race of people plodding on and trying to get ahead.

I find a lot of the younger generation from 7-20 years old are " school mad " with an insatiable appetite for learning and to get ahead and with a far better understanding oif English and French than the Thais, Laotians and Vietnamese in that age group.

and so therefore do you believe Thailand is the land of milk and honey???........ because it most certainly is not!

Lordy, Lordy now a barbed wire fence to stop illegal border crossings has suddenly turned into an electrical anti poaching fence.

And Thailand has become famous for land grabbing.

There are some sick cases posting on here.

I don't have all the facts. Perhaps Pol Pot prevented them from marking their borders, correctly. I doubt it is only one generation to recover from that creature.

If fairness, thais would be masters of moving into places that are vacant, don't belong to them, and then will kick up a stink when told to leave.

Surprised her and her friends didn't blockade the road of the closest town in protest.

But of course, the closest town is likely in Cambodia, so perhaps that's why.

Interesting you should say that. Back in the 60s I used to travel between Paducah and Louisville, Kentucky by way of the Western Kentucky Parkway. Not far from the Owensboro exit in the middle of nowhere, someone had placed signs every hundred yards or so at the edge of a woods that read "no trespassing land mines".

I always wondered if it was true.

My post wasn't meant to be serious... but that's not a bad idea. Just put the signs up (In Khymer language) .... maybe a few more saying "Do you feel lucky, punk?" as well.
